Melville, NY—Canon USA added to its portfolio of image-stabilized binoculars with the 10×30 IS II and 12×36 IS III. While all current Canon binoculars are equipped with an image stabilization (IS) function, new to these binoculars is a microcomputer (similar to Canon’s EF lenses) for improved IS performance and stable high-magnification viewing.

Targeted at travelers, nature observers and sports enthusiasts, the new binoculars’ upgraded IS technology is designed to provide greater viewing comfort while at the same time eliminating the need for a tripod.

“We invested in research and technology for the design and manufacturing of these binoculars in order to achieve high-level optical performance and viewing comfort,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon USA, Inc. “The improvements made to these models will enhance users’ experiences while offering the familiarity and quality they trust in Canon binoculars.”

In addition to improving the IS performance, the latest electronic circuits were used to reduce power consumption over previous models. With more energy efficient operation, the batteries now have a continuous usage time that is approximately two times longer than previous Canon models. At temperatures of 77º F, both new binocular models are said to provide up to nine hours of continuous stabilization on a pair of AA alkaline batteries, compared to four hours on the previous models. They can also be powered by rechargeable NiMH batteries.

10×30 IS II. A 10x, high-magnification ratio is combined with a 30mm/1.18-inch effective diameter objective lens for greater light gathering with high resolution and contrast. Birdwatchers, specifically, will benefit from the less glossy front cover of this model, which was refined to provide a better antireflective surface. A compact size and light weight (5×5.9×2.76 inches, 21.16 ounces) make them easy to use, carry and store.

12×36 IS III. With a 12x, high-magnification ratio, this model provides a 36mm/1.42-inch effective diameter objective lens to help provide clear and bright, high-resolution images. They measure 5×6.8×2.7 inches and weigh 1.5 pounds.

Both models feature Porro II prisms to enhance image resolution and aid in minimizing the loss of light. Long eye relief of 14.5mm/.57-inch is designed to ensure viewing comfort, especially for those with glasses. The doublet field-flattener on both models is said to produce “sharp, virtually distortion-free images from edge-to-edge,” and the hardware includes a low-reflective exterior.

Canon’s 10×30 IS II and 12×36 IS III binoculars will be available in August 2015 for suggested prices of $549.99 and $849.99, respectively. usa.canon.com
