Lucie Gala Honors Outstanding Photographers with 2023 Lucies & IPA Awards

New York, NY—New York hosted the 20th Annual Lucie Awards in a gala black-tie ceremony and awards program on October 30, at Zankel Hall in Carnegie Hall. The 2023 Lucies honor the greatest achievements in photography, as well as excellence in several industry support categories, ranging from publishing to exhibition. Also announced at the gala were the 2023 IPA Award winners.

“Tonight, as we have for 20 years, we pay tribute to the achievements of the winners and honorees whose extraordinary work brings so much meaning to our community and the world. We are thrilled to return to Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, and to be with friends and colleagues, as we spotlight these achievements,” said Hossein Farmani, founder of the Lucie Awards. “The Lucie Awards are an anticipated annual event that celebrates our industry, the individuals and our community.”

The following photographers were recognized with a Lucie Award:

  • Jo Ann Callis: Achievement in Fine Art
  • Carol Guzy: Achievement in Photojournalism
  • Ming Smith: Achievement in Portraiture
  • Firooz Zahedi: Achievement in Entertainment
  • Jamel Shabazz: Achievement in Documentary
  • Donald Miralle: Achievement in Sports
  • Paul Nicklen and Cristina Mittermeier: Humanitarian Award
  • Antwaun Sargent: Spotlight/Visionary Award
IPA Photographer of the Year

Winners of the 2023 International Photography Awards (IPA) juried competition were announced at the Lucie gala. Moreover, the award and cash prize for International Photographer of the Year ($12,000, sponsored by OnePlus) went to Thomas Broening.

IPA Discovery of the Year

The 2023 award as well as cash prize for the IPA Discovery of the Year ($6,000, sponsored by OnePlus) went to Carlo Marrazza.

Thomas Broening and Carlo Marrazza won $12,000 and $6,000 prizes, respectively.
Furthermore, the IPA has awarded more than $265,000 in prize money over the last 20 years. The winning work was displayed during the Lucie Weekend in the annual Best of Show Exhibition at Splashlight. Curated by Susan Baraz, it featured 52 of the winning images from the 2023 competition.

The Lucie Awards highlights a weekend of celebrations hosted by the Lucie Foundation, the Lucie Awards’ governing body. What’s more, the IPA Best of Show party kicked off the weekend. The party was hosted and sponsored by Splashlight. In addition, this year’s Lucie Awards sponsors are Nikon Inc., OnePlus, Splashlight and the International Photo Awards.
