Accessories as a proportion of all camera and accessory sales have risen from 19% to 24% of all revenue, comparing May-July 2007 to the same period in 2010. The most success has come from those attaching to detachable- or interchangeable-lens cameras. For example, while detachable-lens cameras have risen in proportion of overall camera/accessory value from 20% to 28% over the last four years, lenses have risen from 9% to 12%.

Average prices have also proven more sustainable with accessories. The average price of a prime lens from May to July of 2007 was $350, and in the latest three months ending July 2010 it was $412. In the zoom lens segment, the average price went from $374 to $421, while detachable-lens camera prices fell $100 to $862 and the price of a compact camera went from $207 to $169.—Liz Cutting, Senior Imaging Analyst, The NPD Group. npd.com
