While Nokia and Research in Motion/BlackBerry have maintained the top two spots in global smartphone sales, Apple has increased its sales more than sixfold worldwide in the last year, jumping from 2.8 to 13.3 percent in share. That’s according to figures released Wednesday by Gartner research.

According to AppleInsider, Gartner found that Apple, selling less than 1 million iPhones in the second quarter of 2008, moved 5.4 million, globally in the second quarter. The second quarter of 2008 pre-dated the release of the iPhone 3G, as well as much of the worldwide expansion of the brand.

Apple was in third place in market share in both periods.

Overall sales of smartphones were 286.1 million in the quarter, a drop of 6 percent. Nokia remained in first with 45 percent, followed by Research in Motion at 18.7 and Apple at 13.3.
