New York, NY—Based on analysis of 2013 and 2014 holiday sales data on 300,000 products, retail research firm Upstream Commerce found “more sophisticated retail product management, higher quality merchandise offered at discounted prices,” and post-holiday promotions extended after season. All of which suggests a trend retailers are likely to apply beyond the 2015 holiday.

Analysis of fashion retailers showed an increase in the amount of promotions that were running into mid-January. Upstream’s study revealed that the amount of discounted products that were discontinued decreased in 2014 (compared to 2013). For example, Amazon discontinued only 17% in 2014 compared to 25% in 2013.

“Retailers have improved their inventory management practices over the last couple of years. It is clear the trend we are seeing is because retailers are investing greater efforts in discounting the right products, rather than those close to end-of-life,” said Upstream Commerce CTO and cofounder, Shai Geva. upstreamcommerce.com
