The 2013 International CES will spotlight the hottest technologies and innovations across emerging technology, high-performance audio, lifestyle electronics and green initiatives at one of its key venues, the Venetian. Also held at the Venetian will be the majority of the must-see keynote addresses from prominent industry leaders.

Preshow Keynote: Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, Chairman and CEO, Qualcomm, Inc.
The Venetian, Palazzo Ballroom, January 7, 2013, 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Dr. Jacobs’s preshow keynote address will highlight Qualcomm’s “Born Mobile” theme, which addresses mobile technology’s role in the world. Thanks to anywhere, anytime communication, mobile technology brings people together and is enabling a powerfully connected lifestyle. Mobile has become an integral part of consumers’ daily lives and will continue to transform the way individuals and communities interact with one another and the world around them.

State of the CE Industry: Gary Shapiro, President and CEO, Consumer Electronics Association

Shapiro shares the vision of what’s to come in the consumer technology industry in this annual address to thousands of CE executives, professionals and thought leaders. Shapiro led the industry in its successful transition to HDTV, cofounded and chaired the HDTV Model Station and served as a leader of the Advanced Television Test Center (ATTC). He is a charter inductee to the Academy of Digital Television Pioneers and received its highest award as the industry leader most influential in advancing HDTV.

Shapiro has held many exhibition industry leadership posts and received the exhibition industry’s highest honor, the Pinnacle Award. He leads a staff of 140 employees and thousands of industry volunteers and has testified before Congress on technology and business issues more than 20 times. Shapiro also authored the 2011 best-selling book The Comeback: How Innovation Will Restore the American Dream.

Opening Keynote: Kazuhiro Tsuga, President, Panasonic Corp.

Incoming president of Panasonic Corp., Tsuga’s keynote immediately follows the State of the CE Industry address by Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA. Prior to taking on this leadership role for Panasonic, Tsuga was president of AVC Networks Company, the internal arm responsible for Panasonic’s audiovisual and information technology equipment business. Concurrently, he served as senior managing director and was a member of the board. In 2006, Tsuga led Panasonic’s efforts in digital network and software technology as executive officer, and from 2001–2004, he directed the Advance Appliances Development Center for audiovisual technologies. Tsuga has also actively contributed to advancing major industry efforts, including the standardization of the DVD and Blu-ray formats.

Day One: Lowell McAdam, Chairman and CEO, Verizon

Mobile connected devices are driving the consumer electronics industry as consumers seek mobility to stay connected anywhere, anytime. CEA research shows that smartphone sales will see continued growth this year and remain the industry’s primary revenue driver.

McAdam succeeded Ivan Seidenberg as CEO of Verizon in August 2011 and as chairman on January 1, 2012. He oversees the operations of Verizon Communications, including all business units and staff functions. Previously, McAdam served as president and COO of the company’s network-based businesses—Verizon Wireless and Verizon Telecom & Business—as well as Verizon Services Operations. He was also responsible for the technology management and CIO functions.

Holding executive positions at Verizon Wireless since its inception in 2000, McAdam built the company into a leading wireless provider. He was president and CEO of Verizon Wireless from 2007 until being named COO of Verizon, and before that served as Verizon Wireless’s executive vice president and COO.

Day Two: Dr. Stephen Woo, President, Device Solutions Business, Samsung Electronics

Dr. Woo will present his insight on the role of components in enabling consumer product innovations. At Samsung Electronics since 2003, he was appointed general manager of the System LSI Business in 2008 and currently oversees all activities surrounding the division, including logic solutions that provide next-generation features in consumer and mobile products. Under his leadership, revenue has nearly tripled to more than $10 billion in 2011, making it one of the fastest-growing businesses in Samsung Electronics.

Samsung’s System LSI Business has maintained its lead in global market share for several major products, including mobile application processors for smartphones, CMOS image sensors, flat panel display driver ICs (integrated circuits) and smart card ICs for SIM cards. Dr. Woo’s background in the electronics industry dates back to 1977. He spent more than 20 years in senior research and management positions at leading companies in the semiconductor industry, including Bell Laboratories, Sansearch (a start-up he founded) and Texas Instruments.
