San Jose, CA—Tessera Holding Corporation announced that Dr. Petronel Bigioi, senior vice president of engineering and general manager at FotoNation, was named an IEEE Fellow. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is recognizing Dr. Bigioi for his leadership in advancing digital imaging technology for handheld consumer devices.

With more than 15 years of experience in engineering digital imaging solutions for digital still cameras, smartphones and other related devices, Dr. Bigioi has worked alongside his team of engineers to pioneer many of the features that are considered essential components of digital photography today.

“The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE board of directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest and is the highest grade of membership conferred by the institute,” said Tom Lacey, CEO of Tessera Holding Corporation. “Petro has been a pioneer and leader in his field and richly deserves this recognition. A cofounder of FotoNation, Dr. Bigioi is a pioneer of digital camera connectivity. Furthermore, he is also a coauthor of the picture transfer protocol (PTP) and PTP-over-IP networks communication standards. He has a PhD (digital camera), MSc (ASIC design) and also a first-class BSc degree in electronic engineering from Transylvania University in Brasov, Romania. Dr. Bigioi also holds an MEng (networks and communications) degree from National University of Ireland, Galway.
