Though no U.S. release is currently planned, a new camera phone from Taiwan-based Altek might be offering an interesting peek at the future of the category.
The company has introduced a 12MP camphone (the Altek T8680) that includes a 3X zoom lens that actually extends out from the body and they’ve included a small Xenon flash. The company claims that there is also a dedicated imaging processor in the device and are promising an ISO range of 80 to 3200.
Add a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, facial recognition, smile detection, several scene modes and it’s certainly a statement – at least for the Asian market for now. With a price tag of over $400 U.S. it’ll be interesting to see what kind of consumer market it draws.
