Gear Up for Cine Gear Expo 2023: Films, Tech, Talks & Comradery

Los Angeles, CA—After four years, the 25th Cine Gear Expo is returning to Hollywood June 1–4, 2023. The event provides professionals in the film and entertainment industry with the opportunity to learn, see, share as well as mingle with friends, mentors and colleagues. Further, Cine Gear Expo 2023 will attract more than 16,000 professionals from 60+ countries.

Located at the Studios at Paramount in Hollywood, California, the event offers exhibits, product and service introductions, complimentary seminars led by industry leaders, master classes, a film competition as well as an awards ceremony. 

paramount-pictures-cine gear expo 202Activities rev up Thursday, June 1 with the Film Competition Screenings. The competition features entries from students and professionals in the Independent Short Films, Student Films as well as Music Video/Commercial categories.

Cine Gear Expo 2023 Overview

On June 2 at noon, doors open to the exhibits with 350+ exhibitors participating. Technology vendors line the famous streets and the B-Tank area, which is hard to miss with its authentic Adams Family hearse parked near OnLocation’s 17′ one-stop location production truck.

What’s more, this year four soundstages will house scores of indoor exhibits. Lights-out zones will best display the latest lighting, monitors, cameras as well as other technology for motion pictures.

In addition, the expo will provide hands-on opportunities to peek at the latest cameras from ARRI, Blackmagic, Canon, Sony and Panasonic Lumix.

Furthermore, with the age of optics in full swing, the field widens with more than 15 brands: Angenieux, Atlas, Canon, Cooke, Hawk, Vantage, Zeiss, Sigma, Fujifilm, Leitz, Irix, Duclos, Schneider, Tokina and P+S Technik.

Lighting brands exhibiting will include ARRI, Astera, Aputure, Creamsource, DeSisti, Hudson Spider, Kino Flo, Fiilex, Godex, Hobolite, K5600, Litepanels, Lux Lighting, Mole-Richardson, Nanlite, Quasar Science, Rotolight, Rosco, Sumolight, Velvet, Zylight, and more. To rig camera packages, attendees can demo the newest cages, handles, etc., as well as on- and off-camera monitors from SmallHD, Atomos, Sony, Flanders, Lilliput.

Camera support exhibitors will include brands like Miller, Libec and Ronford Baker; cranes from Technocrane; dollies from Chapman; and human-worn systems like the Tiffen Steadicam, Topcrane and Cinema Devices.

And don’t forget gimbals demo’d by DJI and robotics systems from Emotimo, Nikon’s MRMC, Motion Impossible and Sisu.

Beyond the exhibition floor, Cine Gear Expo also offers a networking environment. It is a place where creatives, technicians as well as business professionals can come together, share ideas, forge relationships and even create lasting collaborations.

Educational Panels, Seminars & Master Classes

Educational panels on Friday and Saturday include presentations by Synology, Canon, Sony, Sony CI MediaCloud and Teradek, Band Pro, Digital Cinema Society, Women in Media, Lumix & Lux Machina, Rosco, ARRI, Abel Cine, and IATSE 728.

A sample of the premier seminars includes Canon’s “Creating Scared To Death with Canon’s C500 Mark II and Flex Zooms.” Join Canon Fellow Michael Bravin as he sits down with the creative team of Scared To Death. The team will discuss their choice of Canon’s C500 Mark II, Flex Zooms and Sumire primes to meet the creative challenges in shooting this taut horror film. It will explore the high ISO and low-light performance of the Canon C500 Mark II and the Canon Full Frame Flex Zoom’s 8K T2.4 performance.

Additionally, Sony will present “A Conversation on Color Science.” Color scientist Josh Pines and colorist Tony D’Amore will explore color science. Guests will showcase their work using the Sony Venice and Venice 2 as well as discuss their favorite work, including lessons and challenges they have learned working on various projects.

Further, in a separate seminar, Sony will cover how to get from set to post faster with Camera-to-Cloud.

Panasonic Lumix will present “The Flexibility of ProRes and Real-Time LUT.” The moderator is Neil Matsumoto, Business Development for Lumix. Cinematographers Carissa Dorson and Ben Meredith will discuss using the new Lumix S5IIX on recent cinema projects.

In addition, distinguished members from the American Society of Cinematographers and the International Cinematographers Guild will conduct a series of seminars and panel discussions.

Lighting Master Class

Each year, Cine Gear Expo also holds master classes on specific industry skills. These master classes are presented during the LA Expo live event. They are now also offered as on-demand classes. Master classes are content-specific classes and you must purchase individual class tickets to attend a master class. This year, the Lighting Master Class instructors include Bill Bennett, ASC; James Kniest; and Anka Malatynska.

Film screenings are also back. The Digital Cinema Society and Zeiss Cinematography will present a special showing of the HBO CAS 2023 Camera Assessment. It will locate in the state-of-the-art Paramount Theatre, complete with a Q&A following. Plus, there will be a special screening of Air, followed by a discussion with award-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson, ASC.
