Tokyo, Japan—Fujifilm Corporation is releasing the Fujifilm SX1600 into its the SX series of lens-integrated long-range cameras. The SX1600 features a 40x zoom Fujinon lens that covers a focal length range from a wide-angle 40mm to 1600mm telephoto.

It employs a newly developed image stabilization system as well as fast and accurate AF to capture a distant subject clearly and instantaneously. Consequently, it is a solution for a range of applications, including international border controls, port surveillance and remote inspection of infrastructure facilities.

Long-range cameras are also used for remote inspection purposes against the backdrop of labor shortages in inspection services for aging social infrastructures.

Fujifilm SX1600 Features

The SX1600 supports the 1/1.8-inch effective image size and boasts double the focal length range of the previous SX800. Additionally, its new sensor control technology expands the effective image size and extends the focal length to a 20mm equivalent. Further, users can apply 2x digital zoom to reach the focal length equivalent to 3200mm. Thus, the camera offers a 160x zoom covering a 20–3200mm focal length range. Consequently, it can capture a vehicle registration plate on a car at about one mile away or a person standing two miles away.

The SX1600’s new IS system combines optical image stabilization (OIS) and electronic image stabilization (EIS) to correct image shake. Furthermore, a high-speed AF system attains focus in 0.1 second. The camera uses a rear focus AF mechanism that drives a rear group of small-diameter lens elements at high speed. This reduces the weight of the focusing group.

Plus, a fast on-sensor phase-detection AF system uses phase-detection pixels on the CMOS sensor to measure the distance to the subject based on the deviation of incident light. It combines with contrast AF, which detects areas of strong image contrast for accurate focusing. Also, the AF area was divided into 45 sections, an increase from the previous 9, to make it easier to select an AF area according to the subject’s size and location.

In addition, the camera uses its heat haze/fog reduction function to capture the target subject instantaneously. An optical filter and image-processing technology achieve clear images even in the presence of visibility-reducing fog and heat haze. The lens also features multilayer coating to boost light transmission and control lens flare and ghosting.
