Melville, NY—Canon USA added to its RF lens family with the debut of the Canon RF800mm F5.6 L IS USM as well as its longest focal length RF lens yet, the RF1200mm F8 L IS USM. The new super-telephoto lenses are options for outdoor sports, motor sports and wildlife photography, as well as photojournalism.

Both super-telephoto, fixed focal length lenses are light for their reach. They also share many of the same features; for instance, a customizable electronic focusing ring with manual focus capability during servo AF; as well as Super Spectra Coating (SSC) and Air Sphere Coating (ASC) to help minimize ghosting and flaring. In addition, the lenses are compatible with Canon’s RF1.4x and RF2x extenders.

Additional shared features comprise two focus presets, with the ability to instantly switch between memorized focus distances; and a circular nine-blade aperture. The latter provides photographers with soft blurred backgrounds and bokeh. Also common to both lenses is Canon L-series construction with dust and water resistance, plus a fluorine coating on the front element for easy cleaning.

The RF800mm f/5.6 L IS USM weighs in at 6.9 pounds. It has a minimum focusing distance of 8.53 feet with a maximum close-up magnification of 0.34x. Consequently, it enables wildlife image creators to fill the frame with small subjects, such as birds, at its minimum focusing distance.

In addition, its optical image stabilization technology provides up to 4.5 stops of shake correction and includes three IS operation modes. Moreover, when using the RF1.4x or RF2x extenders, users can experience enhanced effective focal lengths of 1120mm and 1600mm, respectively.

The RF1200mm f/8 L IS USM is the most powerful super-telephoto lens in the Canon RF lens line. It weighs 7.4 pounds; “an outstandingly light figure for a super-tele lens of this type,” the company announced.

Furthermore, it offers a minimum focusing distance of 14.1 feet. Its optical image stabilization achieves up to 4.0 stops of shake correction. Similar to the RF800mm f/5.6 L IS USM lens, it also includes three IS operation modes.
