Mountain Lakes, NY—Cooke Optics introduced the Cooke SP3 lineup of cine lenses. The new prime lens series is based on one of the most influential lenses in film history, the Speed Panchro.

Moreover, the SP3 boasts a completely new design that’s optimized—optically and mechanically—for full-frame mirrorless cameras. The company’s goal is to enable more creatives to enhance the visual narrative of their stories.

The full-frame lineup includes the following focal lengths: 25mm, 32mm, 50mm, 75mm as well as 100mm. With a 9-blade iris, they have a T2.4 to T16 aperture range. In addition, the compact, lightweight lenses are finished in a durable anodized shell. What’s more, they feature dual focus scales and are capable of 8K resolution.

Cooke is making the lenses available with user-changeable mounts for key cameras. They include the E, RF (supplied); L as well as M mount (soon available as accessories). What’s more, the lenses match perfectly with the Cooke Panchro/i Classic (PL mount).

All the lenses in the line have a shared architecture. As a result, focus and iris mechanics are aligned across the set. This allows for fast, accurate lens changes as well as maintains focus and iris motor positions.

In addition, the company states that Cooke SP3 lenses combine resolution and color to transmit a character’s emotion in a more believable way, with natural skin tones. The calibrated on-axis sharpness off their optical design also subtly draws the viewers’ attention to the image’s center. This core imaging effect of the SP3 lens is that they achieve sharpness on the optical axis, which translates to a sharp center of the image. This is complemented by a delicate falloff towards the edge of the frame. Consequently, the lenses mimic the way the human eye sees.

More Features

With a combination of focus falloff and breathing, the Cooke SP3 lenses also enable cinematographers to refine a sense of space and dimension. The SP3’s all-spherical design allows it to create a gradient quality in its smooth, round bokeh.

Further, the SP3 series organically captures specular flaring and veiling glare. Specialized cinematic optical coatings allow cinematographers to control the flare and match color across the set.

Each of the Cooke Optics SP3 lenses has a suggested retail price of $4,500. However, the SP3 five-set with a hard carrying case has an SRP of $21,375.
