Valhalla, NY—Fujifilm North America Corporation announced that it will release the Fujinon Premista 19-45mm T2.9 lens on January 28, 2021. The 19–45mm lens is the third model to join the Premista series of cinema zooms that support large-format sensors.

Large-format image sensors measure 43.2–46.3mm diagonally and are larger than the standard Super 35mm sensors used for cinema cameras.

“The response we’ve seen to the Premista lenses since their 2019 launch has been tremendous; both in terms of excitement as well as usage across feature film, high-end TV productions and commercials,” said Thomas Fletcher, director of Marketing, Optical Devices Division, Fujifilm North America Corporation.

“Now, with stricter safety and efficiency needs on set, there is a growing demand for high-quality zoom lenses that match the quality and ‘look’ of prime lenses; and that efficiently capture images without the hassle of having to frequently change lenses. The Premista family checks all the boxes, with no compromise.”

Fujinon Premista 19-45mm

The Premista 19–45mm is a short, lightweight wide-angle zoom. The lens produces images with natural bokeh, high resolution as well as accurate color rendition. It also controls flare with minimal ghosting for capturing high dynamic range (HDR). In addition, it shows very little distortion throughout its zoom range. Consequently, it alleviates the need to correct footage after shooting.

Moreover, when the lens is combined with the standard zoom (28–100mm) and telephoto zoom (80–250mm) in the Premista series, the kit covers focal lengths from 19mm to 250mm. As a result, Premista lenses cater to a range of shooting scenes, from wide angle to telephoto.

In addition, all three lenses share the same front diameter and gear position for the focus, zoom and iris operating rings; this enables more efficient operability. The focus ring also has a 280º rotation angle with smooth torque during rotation for precise focusing and control. What’s more, Fujifilm applied fluorescent paint to index marks on the focus, zoom and iris rings, so these settings are visible in dark environments.

Key Specs

The Premista 19–45mm T2.9 lens has a constant T-stop of 2.9 across its focal length range. As it covers focal lengths equivalent to five prime lenses, it also reduces the need to change lenses during video shooting.

Its construction features polished, large-diameter aspherical lens elements as well as Fujifilm’s unique zooming system. The system corrects issues such as chromatic aberration, for edge-to-edge sharpness. Distortion is also controlled, even at the widest focal lengths. As a result, Fujifilm says the lens delivers “natural footage with minimal distortion across the zoom range regardless of subject distance and zoom position.”

The Premista 19–45mm also has a flange focal distance adjustment mechanism; this permits users to adjust the flange focal distance by rotating a ring on the lens barrel to correct shifts caused by rapid temperature changes.

In addition, proprietary optical simulation technology and mechanical design technology resulted in a compact lens body. It measures 230mm and weighs 7.3 pounds. As a result, the lens is an option for handheld shooting using a Steadicam or high-angle shooting using a crane.

Like the series’ standard and telephoto zooms, the 19–45mm T2.9 lens supports Zeiss eXtended Data to record metadata when shooting. Subsequently, it reduces the video-editing workload in postproduction.

The Fujinon Premista 19–45mm lens begins shipping January 28, 2021. It has a suggested retail price of $49,900.
