San Diego, CA—Along with the Sony Alpha 9 III mirrorless ILC, Sony Electronics released what it’s calling the “world’s lightest 300mm telephoto prime lens” (as of November 2023). In the premium G Master lineup, the Sony 300mm F2.8 G Master OSS (SEL300F28GM) is a full-frame E-mount lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8.

“Ever since our announcement of the development of this lens in January of this year, we have received an overwhelming number of positive reactions from photographers around the world who are looking forward to its release,” said Yang Cheng, vice president, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics. “By adding this 300mm lens to the already available E-mount 400mm and 600mm super-telephoto prime lenses, it supports a wide range of needs and shooting environments for professional and advanced amateur photographers.”

According to Sony, the new telephoto lens has the high-depiction performance as well as high-speed, high-precision AF (autofocus) of the G Master line. Its lightweight form—3.2 pounds excluding tripod mount—and the lens’s weight balance enable the handheld capture of dynamic subjects, such as fast-moving sports or agile animals.

Moreover, when paired with the Alpha 9 III full-frame camera, high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking of up to 120 frames per second is possible. Sony also engineered the lens to track subjects with complex and diversified movements. Additionally, it is compatible with an optional teleconverter, allowing you to shoot in the telephoto range up to 600mm (900mm equivalent with an APS-C-format cameras).

Further, the lens incorporates Sony’s latest technology to create natural bokeh that makes the subject stand out or to capture sports, news reports, events, and wildlife photography. Its optical design includes three super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements and one ED glass element. They are effectively placed to suppress chromatic aberration and achieve high resolution and contrast across the frame. Resolution and contrast are maintained to the image edges. This permits more flexible cropping and editing.

The creamy bokeh of the G Master design complements the lens’s 300mm focal length and f/2.8 maximum aperture. It enables the use of a narrow depth of field to make subjects pop from the background. What’s more, Sony individually calibrates each lens during manufacture to optimize bokeh quality. Plus, an 11-blade circular aperture mechanism contributes to its smooth rounded bokeh.

In addition, the combination of Sony’s two latest XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and control algorithms achieves high-speed, high-precision and low-vibration AF performance. This is true even when using a teleconverter.

More Specs

Sony’s weight reduction measures make the FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS the lightest in its class. Additionally, Sony engineers designed the lens with weight balance in mind. The internal lens barrel uses magnesium alloy to achieve both robustness and light weight. The weight is not concentrated at the front of the lens barrel, to enable agile and accurate panning while shooting. In addition, mode3, which provides enhanced viewfinder stability and optimizes the image stabilization algorithm, helps you to accurately capture dynamic scenes. Lastly, the new G Master lens has a dust- and moisture-resistant body along with a fluorine coating to help prevent dirt and fingerprints. The Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 G Master OSS lens is now available for preorder. It has a suggested retail price of $5,999.99.
