Teaneck, NJ—The new Leica SL3 mirrorless full-frame camera is now available. In 2015, Leica Camera AG introduced the SL system, combining photography and videography.

“From the beginning, Leica has focused on partnering with its users and the photographic community to ensure that its products achieve exceptional standards. The result is a system that meets the highest requirements in image quality, manufacturing quality and ease of handling,” Leica announced.

The demands of professional photographers have served as a benchmark for the development of the system. In particular, the next-generation Leica SL3. The result is a mirrorless camera that achieves high resolution for both photography and videography. Moreover, the SL3 combines Leica’s latest technology in a more compact, lighter and user-friendly design than the preceding model. The new SL3 functions are based on an ongoing dialogue with professionals.

Leica SL3 Details

At the core of the SL3, is a BSI (backside-illuminated) full-frame CMOS sensor with Triple Resolution technology. This is housed in a solid, all-metal body with leather. Further, to meet various photographic requirements, the sensor records raw files in DNG or JPEG formats with a resolution of either 60, 36 or 18 megapixels. In each case, the full sensor surface is used. This combines with the dynamic range expanded to 15 f-stops and an ISO range from 50 to 100,000.

The camera also employs phase-detection autofocus (PDAF); depth mapping (object-detection AF); and contrast-detection AF. As a result, the system can create sharp pictures even in dim light. In addition, intelligent subject recognition supports photographing dynamic scenes.

Videos are recorded in 8K resolution, supported by codecs such as H.265 and ProRes by Apple. A dedicated timecode interface also allows for professional image and sound synchronization on-set.

Also key is its lens bayonet, which is based on the L-mount standard developed by Leica. Consequently, content creators can use lenses from all the Leica camera systems. Additionally, it is compatible with ultrawide to super-telephoto zoom lenses offered by L-Mount Alliance partners. Therefore, the lens bayonet guarantees system compatibility for the Leica SL3. Specifically, it will work with Leica M lenses, thanks to the design of the image sensor and an external light sensor. Plus, an integrated in-body image stabilization system further broadens the applications for M lenses.

The SL3 also features a Leica EyeRes viewfinder with an optical system made of glass lenses. It shows the subject at up to 120 frames per second and a resolution of 5.76-million pixels. The live preview also enables control over the exposure and composition of images, before releasing the shutter. Also new is a tiltable, 3-inch, high-res touchscreen.

More Features

Another highlight is the SL3’s new user interface. Leica optimized it to enhance user comfort, such as ergonomics, tactile feel and menu navigation. As a result, the grip, button layout and overall design were refined to promote intuitive handling. The updated, streamlined icon and menu design also offer a clear structure, for easier navigation. Leica believes the separation of photo and video modes is beneficial. It is aided by a specific color code for differentiation: red for photo mode; yellow for video mode. Leica-SL3-LCD-menu

Furthermore, the camera’s main functions are adaptable to individual needs. Assignable FN keys and the optimized touch interaction in the menu add to its intuitive operation. When photographing and filming, the SL3’s user interface aligns itself in landscape or portrait format, depending on the camera position. And thanks to IP54 certification, photographers can capture the shot in any weather and environment.

The camera also boasts improved connectivity. There are slots for CFexpress Type B and UHS-II-SD memory cards; a USB-C port for high-speed transmission, tethering and power supply; as well as a full-size HDMI 2.1 output for external monitors or recording equipment. Additionally, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi with MIMO technology provide a stable connection to the Leica FOTOS app. Furthermore, as a certified Apple “Made for iPhone® and iPad®” accessory, the SL3 and its included USB-C cable enable direct connection to Apple products.

Additionally, the new BP-SCL6 battery, along with the separately available double charger, offers capacity. The dual charger permits the simultaneous and faster charging of two batteries. The double charger and the additional battery are available individually or as a set.
