East Brunswick, NJ—Platypod recently received its fifth patent, which is related to the Platypod eXtreme. The new utility patent gives the company exclusivity on photographic baseplates with several hinged adjustable legs. It builds upon a previous patent for a baseplate with an indwelling non-ferrous bolt to hold tripod heads, goosenecks, lights, clamps and other photographic accessories.

Platypod eXtreme Features

Replacing the Platypod Max, the Platypod eXtreme has new hinged spike feet for instant deployment and more stability. The eXtreme is also lighter, weighing 9.6 ounces, and with more cutouts for belt slots and mounting.

The device starts off as a plate, approximately 5×8 inches and fashioned of 5mm thick, 6062 aircraft-grade aluminum. It has an embedded, virtually indestructible 3/8″-16 titanium bolt for mounting most consumer and practically all professional tripod heads onto a tripod system.

The plate incorporates four hinges that allow users to place corresponding threaded spikes into one of several positions to attain a secure grip on surfaces, such as rocks and ice. In addition, the spikes are capped at one end with rubber feet for placement on more delicate surfaces, such as car hoods and roofs.

Content creators can also position them to hang from vertical surfaces, such as chairs or doors. Furthermore, it has open and closed belt slots for strapping onto trees, poles and railings. It also features several countersunk holes for semipermanent attachment with screws to walls and beams.

For vloggers, the Platypod eXtreme also integrates several industry-compatible ¼”- 20 threaded holes. As a result, content creators can attach goosenecks, hinged elbows and other devices to add lighting, sound and video display equipment.

The Platypod eXtreme has a suggested retail price of $149.

Since 2014, Platypod has produced compact, heavy-duty baseplates, along with other products used by content creators. Furthermore, the small, family-owned business is committed to making innovative high-quality products for professional photographers and videographers. Notably, it offers them at affordable prices. All the company’s products are professionally tested as well as made from high-quality materials.
