Fujifilm Reveals X-E1 Interchangeable-Lens X-Series Camera & XF Lenses

Valhalla, NY—Fujifilm North America Corporation introduced its second compact system camera of 2012—the Fujifilm X-E1, a premium interchangeable-lens camera in the company’s X series.

Following in the tradition of the Fujifilm X-Pro1 and utilizing the same proprietary 16.3 megapixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor and X mount for Fujinon XF lenses, the X-E1 sports a body that is 30% smaller than the X-Pro1.

With top and front covers made from die-cast magnesium and a travel-friendly size, the X-E1 will come in two classic designs: a two-tone black and silver or a solid black. Both versions will ship as kits with the XF18-55mm (27-84mm) f/2.8-4 lens in November.

“It’s an exciting day for Fujifilm as we launch our second premium interchangeable-lens digital camera this year, the Fujifilm X-E1, and two extraordinary new XF lenses,” said Go Miyazaki, president and chief operating officer, Fujifilm North America Corp. “The X series has thrilled photographers around the world with its exceptional image quality and stunning design, and the new X-E1 promises to continue that tradition with a slightly smaller body and all of the attention to detail that is the hallmark of Fujifilm X-series digital cameras.”

Fujifilm’s X-Trans CMOS sensor is engineered to deliver resolution that is superior to other APS-C sensors and equal to even some DSLRs’ full-frame sensors, added Miyazaki. The X-E1’s color filter array is also said to minimize moiré and false color without the need for an optical low-pass filter, making it possible for the camera to maximize its high resolution to capture photographs with “accuracy and clarity across the whole image.”

Designed to take advantage of the camera’s mirrorless design, the X mount has a short flange back distance of 17.7mm, made possible by a mount ring as thin as 2.5mm. This means the rear lens elements are as close as possible to the sensor, reducing the back focus distance of each lens to the minimum possible and helping achieve high resolution from edge to edge. When fitted with a Fujifilm M-mount adapter, the X-E1 can also use M lenses.

The camera comes equipped with a high-luminance 2.36-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder that offers a horizontal field of view of 25º, so users can scan an entire scene. This complemented by a 2.8-inch, 460K-dot LCD screen.

To inspire creativity, the X-E1 offers Fujifilm’s film simulation modes to simulate the color palates of photo film, including Velvia, Astia and Provia as well as two settings based on professional color negative films PRO Neg.Std and PRO Neg.Hi. Add to that a multiple exposure function and panoramic shooting modes.

Also featured are: Full HD movie capture at 24 fps; the use of monochrome or film simulation modes when video recording; the ability to capture movies with a bokeh effect; an external microphone input; a built-in pop-up TTL flash; ISO 100–25,600; a Q menu shortcut button; in-camera RAW conversion; and autobracketing.

Fujifilm’s X-E1 will be available in November for $999.95, body only; the X-E1 with an XF18-55mm f/2.8-4 lens will retail for $1,399.95.

New Fujinon XF Lenses

The X-E1 camera pairs perfectly with the XF18-55mm (27-84mm) f/2.8-4 lens to deliver fast focusing, while the camera’ contrast detection works with the lens to bring subjects into sharp focus in 0.1 sec. The lens boasts an all-glass structure consisting of 14 elements in 10 groups, including three aspherical lenses and an extra-low dispersion element, as well as a seven-blade rounded diaphragm. At f/2.8-4 wide open, this zoom lens is geared for low-light photography and creating a bokeh effect. It also features OIS to provide image stabilization equivalent to four stops to combat the effect of camera shake. $699.95.

The new XF14mm (21mm) f/2.8 single focal length lens offers an ultra wide angle and 10 elements in seven groups, including two aspheric and three ELD elements, as well as a seven-blade rounded diaphragm. With its distance and depth-of-field scales on the barrel, the XF14mm lens is suited for a range of shooting techniques. $899.95. fujifilmusa.com
