Moving on Micro Four Thirds

PMA certainly had plenty of Micro Four Thirds news as both Olympus and Panasonic displayed product on the show floor. While Panasonic’s was announced as “ready to roll”, the Olympus model, a high-end compact using the Micro Four Thirds technology, was still being announced as a concept, much as it was at photokina last year.

The company did say that he likely launch date was “sometime this summer.” The design of the Olympus model represents a departure from DSLR design altogether and actually looks more like a retro rangefinder model.

Also at PMA, Panasonic announced the video-enabled Lumix DMC-GH1, that is also due out early this summer. Again, the idea behind the Micro Four Thirds technology is to develop DSLRs with a more compact design for interchangeable lenses. The systems partnering companies are hoping to bring higher end cameras to market that will appeal to the snap-shooter who remain reluctant to make the switch to DSLRs due to the bulk inherent in their design.
