Ridgefield Park, NJ—Samsung Electronics America launched the NX mini as the “world’s slimmest and lightest interchangeable-lens camera.” Designed to be portable and stylish, the Smart NX mini has a 1-inch, 20.5 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor along with NFC and Wi-Fi capabilities, to allow users to take high-resolution shots that can be shared quickly and easily.

“The NX mini has both style and substance, perfect for trendsetters looking for a fun way to capture their life in outstanding photo quality,” said Myoung Sup Han, executive vice president and head of the Imaging business team at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung introduced the first flip-up touch display camera in 2011 as a leader of the selfie trend, and has designed the device in response to evolving consumer demands. This approach is exemplified by the NX mini, with features such as a 3.0-inch flip-up display and wide-angle lens exclusively designed to address the global passion for selfies. Its lightweight design also means that it can slip in a pocket, for photography anywhere and everywhere.”

The NX mini weighs 5.68 ounces (body only) and sports an ultra-slim, 0.89-inch body. Reflecting the popular consumer trend of selfie photos, it has a range of features that enable photographers to indulge in self-shooting, including: a 3.0-inch touch display that flips up 180º, so users can frame images of themselves; a 9mm wide-angle lens to capture group shots from an arm’s length away; and the new wink shot function for hands-free capture. With wink shot, users set up their shot and wink at the camera to capture an image. Once a wink is detected, the NX mini takes a shot automatically after two seconds.

Other features include: 6-frames-per-sec continuous shooting; a 1/16,000-sec shutter speed to freeze fast-moving scenes without blurring; ISO 160–12,800, extendable from 100–25,600; “tag & go” connectivity that pairs the NX mini with NFC-enabled smartphones and tablets, by touching the two together; Mobile Link to transfer multiple images to the paired devices; Group Share, for sending images to four devices simultaneously; Remote Viewfinder Pro, to control the NX mini via a smartphone; various scene modes; baby monitor mode, which activates a paired smartphone via an app when noise is detected, so parents can see if they need to attend to their child; and 1,920×1,080 Full HD, 1,280×720 HD, 640×480 and 320×240 (all 30 fps) video recording in MPEG-4 and H.264 file formats.

Additional storage options are integrated into the NX mini, with the ability to upload images from the camera to the cloud. Users can upload their pictures directly from the NX mini to Dropbox and Flickr.

Specialized NX-M Lenses for NX mini

Samsung introduced three optimized NX mini lenses (NX-M) that are also sold separately to meet individual shooting preferences.
•  The NX-M 9mm f/3.5 ED lens has an ultra-slim design, and its wide angle makes it a choice for capturing landscapes and self-portraits. This lens also provides the optimum angle for taking selfies. $179.
•  The NX-M 9–27mm f/3.5–5.6 ED OIS lens is a micro-compact zoom lens for a variety of shooting options, from wide angle to telephoto shots, with optical image stabilization. $279.
•  The NX-M 17mm f/1.8 OIS lens will enable photographers to capture creative bokeh effects that make the highly detailed subject stand out from the surroundings. TBA.

NX mini owners will also be able to use 15 Samsung NX lenses via a specialized NX-M mount adapter (ED-MA4NXM).

Samsung’s NX mini compact system camera, which features a solid metal body with a leatherette finish, will be available in early April in five stylish colors—white, pink, mint green, brown and black—in the following configurations: paired with the 9mm NX-M lens, $449; or with the 9–27mm lens and SEF-7A flash, $549. samsung.com
