San Diego, CA—Sony Electronics introduced the α68 (model ILCA-68) camera with proprietary 4D autofocus technology and many pro-style features from the α77 II.
The α68 employs Sony’s unique 4D Focus system that’s designed to deliver “extraordinary AF performance under any shooting conditions—even in lighting as low as EV-2.” The system uses 79 autofocus points and a dedicated phase-detection AF sensor, with 15 cross points and an f/2.8 AF sensor point for dimly lit scenes. The system is said to provide fast, wide-area AF with predictive tracking that locks onto fast-moving subjects. Additionally, the camera’s Translucent Mirror technology delivers constant AF tracking at up to 8 frames per sec.
The camera boasts a 24 megapixel, APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor with an ISO 100–25,600 sensitivity range. The sensor is teamed with the latest Bionz X image processor that uses Detail Reproduction and Diffraction-Reducing technologies plus area-specific noise reduction, to produce finely detailed shots.
Full HD movie recording uses the XAVC S format, with a high bit rate of up to 50 Mbps and low noise. Due to Translucent Mirror technology, Sony says shooters can “enjoy nonstop, continuous autofocus with accurate subject tracking during video shooting, producing crisp, professional looking footage.”
The compact camera also features SteadyShot Inside stabilization to reduce the effects of camera shake and allow for blur-free handheld shooting at all focal lengths.
Framing stills and movies is via an OLED Tru-Finder that features 100% frame coverage with high contrast and accurate color reproduction. Complementing the finder is a 2.7-inch LCD monitor that tilts up 135º or 55º downward. Serious photo enthusiasts will also appreciate a backlit top display that permits quick confirmation of camera settings.
As found on the high-end α7 series, the α68 has a rear control wheel for quick fingertip adjustment of camera settings, as well as 10 customizable buttons for assigning frequently-used functions. There’s also a front control dial for adjustments of settings. Additionally, a multi-interface shoe and multi terminal let users expand their creative options with optional accessories, including flashes, lights, microphones and remote commanders.
The Sony α68 interchangeable-lens camera will be available in April for $600 body only or $700 in a kit with the DT 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 SAM II lens. sony.com
