According to NPD’s August 2011 “Digital Camera Market Basket” study, 46% of detachable-lens camera owners reported reusing accessories from a prior camera purchase.
Topping the list of “recycled” accessories were tripods, lenses and camera cases. Marketers should have dialogs with camera buyers on their current camera outfits, and suggest not only new accessories but also upgrades to existing equipment to enhance their photography experiences.
For instance, tripods with fluid heads or more spacious and ergonomic gadget bags may not be upgrades detachable-lens camera buyers would consider on their own.—Liz Cutting, director, senior imaging analyst, The NPD Group
