Valhalla, NY—When Fujifilm North America announced its new GFX100 II flagship mirrorless camera and two GFX tilt-shift lenses—the Fujinon GF30mm f/5.6 T/S and Fujinon GF110mm f/5.6 T/S Macro—it also introduced a large-aperture prime lens. The Fujinon GF55mm F1.7 R WR offers a standard 44mm-equivalent focal length for GFX system content creators.

The company additionally released an updated roadmap for GFX system interchangeable lenses.

“GF55mm F1.7 is designed to give image makers a versatile solution that lets them creatively shape images that make the most of our GFX system’s incredible dynamic range and unsurpassed image quality,” said Victor Ha, vice president, Fujifilm North America Corporation, Electronic Imaging and Optical Devices Divisions.

“Being able to make images on a GFX system digital camera at F1.7 is incredibly special. It brings an unmatched quality to the images that are created, especially when it comes to the quality of the bokeh in the image’s out-of-focus areas. It’s truly a lens made for any GFX system user and one we believe should find a permanent place in every photographer’s camera bag.”

The new lens is an option for a range of genres, including travel, street and documentary photography. It can capture intricate images with detail as well as environmental portraits with a balance between the subject and the out-of-focus background.

Moreover, the GF55mm f/1.7 features a high-speed f/1.7 aperture, just like the recently released GF80mm f/1.7 R WR lens. And it complements the GF80mm with its comparatively wider focal length, with a field of view like that of the human eye.

The lens incorporates 14 lens elements in 10 groups. They include aspherical and extra-low dispersion (ED) elements to achieve  image-resolving performance. Further, the lens’s 11 diaphragm blades create rounded bokeh. The advanced lens blade design also controls chromatic and spherical aberrations, to create soft, creamy bokeh.

Moreover, the lens offers fast, accurate, nearly silent autofocus via a direct current (DC) motor and a GMR sensor. In addition, for all-weather shooting, the lens has weather-resistant seals in nine places to prevent dust and water from affecting its operation. Plus, it will operate at temperatures as low as 14ºF.

Weighing 1.7 pounds, the lens measures a compact 3.9 inches. The Fujinon GF55mm f/1.7 R WR lens will launch in early fall 2023. It will have a suggested retail price of $2,299.95. Fujifilm-Fujinon-GF55mm-F1.7-R-WR-_top_GFX100S

Fujifilm Updated Roadmap of GFX System Interchangeable Lenses

Fujifilm’s updated interchangeable-lens development roadmap for its GFX system of mirrorless digital cameras includes two G-mount lenses. They are an ultra-telephoto prime lens and a power zoom lens, optimized for video creation.

With the addition of these two lenses, Fujifilm’s GFX system lens lineup will extend to 20 models. As a result, they will expand the capabilities of the GFX system’s 55mm large-format sensor for both filmmakers and photographers.

Ultra-Telephoto Prime Lens

Fujifilm will introduce a 500mm ultra-telephoto prime lens (396mm equivalent). The lens expands the selection of GFX lenses from 250mm to 500mm. Further, it doubles the system’s native focal length coverage at the long end. Moreover, the lens can pair with a teleconverter to achieve a focal length of 700mm (554mm equivalent) for photographing distant subjects.

Power Zoom Lens

The company will also introduce a G-mount motorized zoom lens that will provide electronic control over aperture, focus and zoom. This lens will cater to the needs of creatives by offering situational solutions for both still and video production.

“We are excited about the value these new lens offerings will bring not only to the GFX system portfolio of lenses, but also, and especially, to creatives as they continue to strive to tell their stories,” added Victor Ha. “Their broad capabilities will make these lenses unique and valuable assets to creators looking to create compelling still and video content.”
