Fujifilm Fujinon XF8mm F3.5 R WR: Widest XF Series Lens

Valhalla, NY—Accompanying the introduction of the Fujifilm X-S20 camera was an announcement regarding the Fujifilm Fujinon XF8mm F3.5 R WR lens. For photographers and content creators seeking an ultrawide-angle solution, the new lens will join the XF lineup of interchangeable lenses for Fujifilm X series mirrorless cameras.

“XF8mm F3.5 is an incredibly compact, wide-angle lens that will help image makers unlock another way of creatively seeing the world,” said Lisa Baxt, marketing director, Electronic Imaging Division, Fujifilm North America Corporation.

“Its impressive wide angle of view and compact design makes it small enough to be an everyday carry item, which is critical for photographers with specialties, including landscape, architecture or real estate. We’re excited to see this lens become a must-have for everyone in the X series family.”

With a 12mm-equivalent (35mm) focal length, the XF8mm f/3.5 offers the widest angle of view of any Fujifilm X-mount lens. Its 121º diagonal and 112º horizontal angle of view makes it an option for image-making scenarios that require an especially wide field of vision. It’s also an option for vlogging and selfie-style video creation.

Moreover, the lens consists of 12 lens elements in nine groups. They include three aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion (ED) elements. These elements work to control lens distortion, spherical aberration as well as astigmatism to deliver image-resolving performance.

The new lens also combines a wide-angle lens’s characteristically short moving distance for the focusing lens with the use of an inner focus system. The result is an autofocus (AF) speed as fast as 0.02 sec to capture action photography.

Further, as a wide-angle lens, which typically has a greater-than-normal depth of field, its aperture stops down to facilitate pan-focusing. Coupled with its image-resolving performance, the lens can resolve information in the frame with edge-to-edge clarity. As a result, it can depict the content in intricate detail.

Beneficial Features

In addition, the lens’s lightweight, compact form factor offers portability. The positioning of the aspherical and ED elements also contributes to the lens’s compact, lightweight design. The lens measures just more than 2 inches long and weighs approximately 7.6 ounces.

What’s more, placing the distortion-controlling aspherical elements at the front not only reduced the lens’s size but also kept the filter thread size to the popular 62mm. Consequently, the lens accommodates a variety of filters.

Also beneficial to outdoor photography is a weather-sealed lens barrel in 10 locations. It not only achieves dust and weather resistance but can also operate in temperatures as low as 14ºF. Additionally, the front lens element has a fluorine coating to repel water and offer protection against stains.

Fujifilm will release the Fujinon XF8mm f/3.5 R WR lens on or around June 29, 2023. It will have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $799.95.
