Bethlehem, PA—OM Digital Solutions Corporation debuted the M.Zuiko Digital ED 8-25mm F4.0 Pro lens. The Micro Four Thirds system lens covers an ultrawide 16mm equivalent to a standard 50mm equivalent focal length.

OM Digital plans to release the compact, lightweight, ultrawide-angle lens on July 9, 2021. Moreover, the company says the high-magnification zoom lens delivers the image quality expected of the M.Zuiko Pro series. Dust and splashproof, it supports versatile photographic opportunities, including ultrawide-angle landscape photos and outdoor portraits as well as video.

The new lens covers a range of shooting scenarios, from a 16mm equivalent to a maximum 3.1x zoom magnification. What’s more, it is the first lens in the M.Zuiko Pro series to feature a retracting mechanism to ensure a compact size. The portable lens weighs less than 15 ounces.

Furthermore, it is constructed with 16 elements in 10 groups, integrating special lenses such as super ED, ED and EDA. Consequently, various types of aberrations are suppressed, including chromatic aberration, to achieve high-res, sharp depiction across its zoom range.

In addition, the use of a large DSA (dual super aspherical) lens also significantly reduces sagittal comatic aberration. “This design delivers high-level image reproduction from the center to the edges of the image even at the widest aperture setting, ideal for night scenes and star photography,” the company announced.

Optimized ZERO coating and the lens shape also help to suppress ghosts and flaring during backlit shooting. And because the constant f/4.0 aperture is available at any focal length, exposure control is easy when operating the zoom and while recording video.

Photographers can also enjoy macro shooting with a maximum shooting magnification of 0.42x for performance said to rival that of a half-macro lens. The closest focusing distance is 9 inches across the entire zoom range. As a result, it possible to operate the zoom ring after approaching the subject for angle-of-view adjustment.

The new lens also supports focus stacking; this feature merges images into a single photo in focus from the foreground to the background in-camera.

Other Notable Features

This lens additionally features IPX1-equivalent splashproof and dustproof performance. It is also freezeproof to 14°F. Further, when paired with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and E-M5 series cameras, photographers can use the lens even in rain and snow.

Despite its ultrawide-angle design, the lens is 72mm filter-compatible, allowing the use of PL or ND filters. Other features comprise a fluorine coat on the front lens for easy cleaning; a manual focus clutch for instantaneous switching between auto and manual focus options; and a lens function button to change settings with the touch of a thumb while holding the camera.

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 8–25mm f/4.0 Pro lens will come packaged with the LH-76E lens hood, LC-72C front lens cap, LR-2 rear lens cap and a protective cloth wrap. It is available for preorder for $1,099.99.
