Everett, MA—Megadap, a manufacturer of camera-lens accessories, launched the Megadap ETZ21 Pro. It’s the third generation of the company’s ETZ series of automatic AF lens adapters for Nikon Z mirrorless cameras. The adapter works with both full-frame and APS-C models. The ETZ21 Pro enables photographers to use Sony E-mount AF lenses on Nikon Z cameras. Consequently, it unlocks 100+ AF lenses for Nikon Z camera users.

“An important aspect to note is that the ETZ21 Pro builds upon the foundation set by its highly acclaimed predecessor, the ETZ21. It delivers the same exceptional autofocus (AF) functionalities and capabilities,” the company announced.

Furthermore, the adapter incorporates mechanical enhancements to offer a more seamless and user-friendly experience. Megadap’s engineers considered customer feedback as well as industry demands. This resulted in two changes meant to significantly elevate the performance of the adapter.

The first enhancement regards the firmware update method. While the ETZ21 required firmware updates via an included USB cable, the ETZ21 Pro has a more seamless approach. Users can now update the adapter’s firmware directly through their Nikon Z camera, with both the adapter and lens securely installed.

The second improvement is the refined mechanical redesign of the ETZ21 Pro to ensure improved compatibility. The connecting pads on the adapter, previously used for USB cable upgrades, were removed. As a result, the adapter sports a sleeker and more streamlined design.

Furthermore, the ETZ21 Pro features a redesigned lens release button to help ensure smooth lens detachment. What’s more, Tamron lens owners can also enjoy improved mechanical fittings specifically tailored for Tamron lenses.

New Firmware Upgrades

In addition, Megadap developed an upgraded firmware, available for both the ETZ21 and ETZ21 Pro. The firmware introduces a range of features and enhancements to elevate the overall performance of the adapters. Notably, the firmware update provides support for the latest Nikon Z 8 and Z 9 mirrorless cameras.

Key highlights of the firmware upgrade include the ability of Nikon Z cameras to recognize the ETZ as a native lens. Previously, Megadap firmware was seen by Nikon cameras as an adapter ring, which limited some functionality. This new upgrade provides a more seamless integration, allowing photographers to utilize the full capabilities of their Nikon Z cameras.

Moreover, users can now utilize the customizable buttons on Sony lenses, for enhanced control. Another firmware update enables the adapter to include lens brands and model details in the EXIF data. This update was developed to facilitate more efficient organization and post-processing. However, certain lenses may not display the brand name in the EXIF data.

Further, the firmware supports in-camera lens manual correction to fine-tune lens parameters. It also offers improved focus performance in challenging conditions, such as low light. Finally, the firmware provides improved stabilization during high-speed, continuous shooting with more consistent speed and exposure accuracy.
