Newark, NJ—Panasonic’s new large-aperture, wide-zoom lens, the Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-35mm F2.8 Asph/Power OIS, provides a 24–70mm-equivalent focal length range for Lumix G cameras. The lens is a redesigned replacement for the Lumix G X Vario 12–35mm f/2.8 II Asph, which was considered one of Panasonic’s best Lumix G Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lenses.

The release of the new lens reflects Panasonic’s commitment to the development of Micro Four Thirds lenses to fulfill the needs of its customers. Moreover, photographers can use the versatile lens for virtually any shooting situation. That’s thanks to its large aperture; OIS (optical image stabilizer) integration; compact size; and lightweight body.

Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-35mm F2.8 Asph/Power OIS Specs

The Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12–35mm f/2.8 Asph/Power OIS is constructed with 14 elements in 9 groups. Further, its optical design includes four aspherical lenses, one UED (ultra-extra-low dispersion) and one UHR (ultrahigh refractive index) lens.

In addition, the glass material of the UHR element was updated with higher transmittance for greater natural color reproduction. What’s more, Panasonic’s nano surface coating provides antireflection performance to produce clear images. Due to its thin coating with nanometer-level microstructure and an ultralow dispersion ratio, the reflections of the entire 380–780mm wavelength, including the visual light range, are reduced. Combined with a new light-shielding part, ghosting and flare is also minimized.

The lens also features a shorter focusing distance of 5.9 inches (wide end) with a larger magnification ratio of 0.21x (17mm). This is compared with the conventional Lumix G X Vario 12–35mm f/2.8 II.

Furthermore, the redesigned lens offers smooth, silent operation with the camera’s high-speed contrast-detection AF system, with the sensor drive at a maximum 240 frames per sec. It is also a solution for video recording. It incorporates a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing, and it also includes a micro-step aperture control for smooth exposure change.

Additionally, combined with the camera’s body IS and the lens’s OIS, Dual IS 2 provides effective handshake correction.

The lens’s external design was also refined compared to the previous lens. It boasts improved mobility, weighing approximately 10.8 ounces. Adding to its flexibility is a rugged dust/splash-resistant design that withstands use under harsh conditions, even at 14ºF. Other features include a 58mm filter diameter and a 7-blade circular aperture diaphragm.

The Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12–35mm f/2.8 Asph/Power OIS lens will reach retail late February 2023. It will have a suggested retail price of $899.99.
