Parsippany, NJ—Ricoh Imaging Americas introduced the HD Pentax DA ★ 16–50mm F2.8ED PLM AW lens. The latest addition to the new generation Pentax Star (★) lens series, it works with Pentax K–mount digital SLR cameras. Star–series lenses offer the highest imaging performance of all Pentax lenses.
Moreover, this large–aperture standard zoom lens features an open aperture of f/2.8 over its entire zoom range. It also incorporates a newly designed optical system with a lighter, more compact focus–lens group. And for the first time, the lens drives its focus-lens group with an advanced PLM (pulse motor). Consequently, it helps assure smooth, high–speed autofocus operation with minimized operational noise.
Thanks to the redesigned focus mechanism, it also provides a minimum focusing distance of just less than 12 inches. Along with a maximum magnification of 0.24x, the lens is a solution for capturing all types of subjects.
In addition, the lens was fine–tuned for better operability during manual–focus operation. It also includes a quick–shift focus system to provide an instant shift from AF to manual.
HD Pentax DA ★ 16-50mm F2.8ED PLM AW Key Specs
The new lens compensates for various aberrations to deliver sharp, clear images. It incorporates one ED (extra–low dispersion) glass optical element; one anomalous glass optical element; and two ED aspherical glass optical elements. Subsequently, it reduces chromatic aberration over its entire zoom range.
In addition, high–grade, multilayer Pentax HD coating reduces reflectance to less than 50% of conventional multilayer coatings, according to Ricoh Imaging. Thus, it effectively minimizes flare and ghost images even in backlighting.
The HD (high-definition) lens employs an electromagnetic diaphragm control mechanism; as a result, it provides precision exposure control and smooth focus tracking when used in combination with compatible DSLRs. The mechanism also enables the capture of video clips using automatic exposure control, even when there are differences in brightness.
Furthermore, a nine-blade circular diaphragm produces a natural bokeh (defocus) effect, even at open aperture. The new AW (all weather) lens additionally features dustproof, weather-resistant construction. And SP (Super Protect) coating keeps its front surface free of dust and stains
Additional Features
In addition, the new lens offers limited lens extension during focusing between the minimum focusing distance and infinity and optimum focus–ring torque. Its quick–shift focus system provides an instant shift to manual–focus operation—after locking the subject in focus during AF operation by pressing the camera’s shutter-release button halfway down.
The HD Pentax DA ★ 16–50mm f/2.8ED PLM AW lens will ship August 2021. It will have a suggested retail price of $1,399.95.
