Ronkonkoma, NY—Sigma is billing the new Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary lens as the “world’s smallest and lightest ultrawide-angle zoom lens for APS-C cameras [as of October 2023].” Further, the compact lens covers a 35mm-equivalent focal range of 15–27mm.

In addition, Sigma announced the development of the 70–200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS|Sports large-aperture zoom for full-frame mirrorless cameras.

The new 10-18mm Contemporary lens is a solution for landscape and travel photography as well as video and online content creation. The lens will come in L, Sony E and Fujifilm X mounts.

“With ultrasharp optics, a bright f/2.8 aperture and a newly developed push-on petal-type lens hood, photographers can create expressive images anytime, anywhere,” Sigma announced. “The lens features a unique aspherical element that reduces the overall size of the lens and enhances image quality.”

Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN C Key Features

The lens has a 4.6-inch minimum focusing distance (at 10mm) and a 1:4 max magnification ratio to produce compositions with expansive backgrounds and pleasing bokeh. Employing a fast AF stepping motor and minimal focus breathing, you can mount the lens onto a motorized gimbal to create videos for social media as well as professional projects.

Moreover, the large-aperture, ultrawide-angle zoom uses special optics to correct aberrations and produce sharp images across the entire image. Its design features 13 elements in 10 groups. This includes three FLD (fluorite equivalent), one SLD (special-low dispersion) and four aspherical elements. The use of an aspherical lens with a large refractive index as the first element enabled a construction with fewer elements.

Consequently, multiple aspherical lenses and SLD glass elements permit the lens to produce high-resolution images while it remains compact and lightweight. And super multilayer coating works to eliminate flare and ghosting.

In addition, the lens weighs a portable 9.2 ounces, measures 2.8×2.4 inches and has a 72.2mm diameter (L mount specs). What’s more, an inner-focus system helps keep it compact. As a result, you can easily carry the lens around. Plus, its form factor allows you to attach it to an APS-C mirrorless camera and a gimbal to create a portable video setup. Sigma includes a newly developed push-on petal-type hood. Unlike conventional bayonet lens hoods that attach with a rotating movement, the push-on lens hood attaches onto the lens using a spring and lever system. This new hood design reduced the size as well as thickness of the hood, so it matches the compact size of the lens.

Additionally, the lens mount has a dust- and splash-resistant structure. It incorporates rubber sealing to protect it from dust and water drops.

Lens Applications

With its ultrawide focal length, portability and sharp optics, the Sigma 10–18mm f/2.8 DC DN | Contemporary is an option for landscape, travel, interior as well as street photography. It also boasts video capability owing to its bright f/2.8 aperture. As a result, the lens is a solution for shooting in low-light environments and creating a shallow depth of field. It’s also suitable for handheld vlogging that requires the capture of both the subject and the environment.

Additionally, for video creation, the lens design minimizes focus breathing. The change in the angle of view due to focus shift is diminished, creating a natural-looking focus shift when recording video. Plus, its fast, quiet stepping motor is used to deliver precise AF when shooting stills and video.

Compatible with in-camera AF-tracking modes, the lens also supports the electronic image stabilization function; aberration correction function; DMF; and AF+MF in camera bodies from various manufacturers. Moreover, the ultrawide-angle lens provides a generous angle of view even when the electronic IS function crops the image. Plus, it supports switching between linear and nonlinear focus ring settings on L-mount cameras.

Other features include a 7-blade rounded diaphragm; a brass bayonet mount; and compatibility with the separately sold Sigma USB Dock UD-11 (L mount). Sigma’s Mount Conversion service is also available.

Furthermore, with the addition of the 18–50mm f/2.8 DC DN | Contemporary, Sigma’s lineup of lenses for APS-C mirrorless cameras includes 16mm, 23mm, 30mm and 56mm prime lenses. All provide f/1.4 brightness.
