Commack, NY—Tamron revealed the development of the Tamron 20-40mm F2.8 Di III VXD (model A062). The fast-aperture standard zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras will launch in fall 2022. However, due to the current global health crisis, the release date or product supply schedule could change.

“The 20-40mm F2.8, Tamron’s latest innovation, is an unparalleled new fast-aperture standard zoom lens that is easily carried around for everyday shooting for both still images and video. Designed for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras, the lens was created in aggressive pursuit of portability that is ideal for everyday use,” the company announced.

Tamron also claims that starting from 20mm at the ultrawide-angle end and covering up to 40mm in the standard focal range, it is the smallest and lightest lens in its class. The company is positioning the lens as a solution for still photography, such as travel and street photography. It is also a tool for creating vlogs and other video content.

In addition, when combined with the in-camera crop function or on an APS-C-format mirrorless camera, the lens covers a 30-60mm-equivalent full-frame focal length range. Moreover, for those who find 40mm isn’t quite enough for their purposes, the lens offers a 20–60mmequivalent zoom range on a full-frame camera by activating the in-camera crop function.

The new lens incorporates Tamron’s VXD (voice-coil eXtreme-torque drive), an AF drive system using a linear motor focus mechanism. The VXD boasts superior quietness and agile performance. It also achieves high-speed, precise autofocus.

In addition, it has an MOD (minimum object distance) of 6.7 inches and maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.8 at the wide end. Thus, it provides close-range shooting capability. Consequently, it offers the added feature of wide macro photography.

Moreover, the lens delivers a fast f/2.8 aperture across its entire zoom range from 20mm to 40mm. It does so in a compact and lightweight design. It measures 3.4 inches and weighs 12.9 ounces.

Further, at the longest zoom end, the lens offers a standard focal range of 40mm for everyday shooting of snaps, portraits and food photos. At the wide end, the ultrawide 20mm focal length lets users enjoy a broad range of photography, including natural landscapes that make use of the unique ultrawide-angle perspective.

In addition, its form factor provides optimized handling that is well balanced even when accessories like camera grips or gimbal stabilizers are attached.

Another feature is rapid zooming with a zoom ring rotation arc of 65º. It also has a new exterior finish with improved texture and scratch resistance; a Ø67mm filter size that matches most other Tamron mirrorless lenses; moisture-resistant construction; and a protective fluorine coating. Using Tamron Lens Utility software, photographers also can adjust the focus ring function setting and update firmware. The lens is compatible with camera-specific features and functions, including Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF system as well as eye AF. Tamron has not yet revealed the price of the compact Tamron 20–40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD (model A062).
