Commack, NY—The Tamron 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD (model A067) launched as a nextlevel ultra-telephoto zoom lens exclusively for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras.

“The 50–400mm is a highly portable, versatile zoom lens that ensures users never miss a shooting opportunity, from the 50mm standard focal length up to the 400mm ultra-telephoto. This is a breakthrough product that creates an entirely new category of ultra-telephoto-mirrorless zoom lenses, another first for Tamron,” the company announced.

With an 8x zoom ratio that begins at 50mm (commonly called the standard focal length for full-frame cameras) and extends to 400mm, the ultra-telephoto zoom is the same size as conventional 100–400mm zoom lenses. However, it offers a wider angle of view on the wide end.

Moreover, its wide-end focal length of 50mm enables users to create images that not only capture a subject close-up but also utilize the background. In addition, they can photograph a range of subjects—from landscapes and wild birds to animals, sports, and small group photos—all with a single compact lens.

The lens has an overall length of 7.2 inches and a weight of 40.7 ounces. Also, despite its high magnification ratio, high image quality is delivered across the entire 50–400mm range through the effective arrangement of special lens elements.

Since the 50-400mm provides up to one-half life-size magnification during close focus, photographers can enjoy half-macro photography with close-up shooting capabilities. The lens has an MOD (minimum object distance) of 9.8 inches at the 50mm.

In addition, the lens uses Tamron’s VXD (voice-coil eXtreme-torque drive) linear motor focus mechanism. It combines AF speed and precision to enable fast, accurate focusing from MOD to infinity. Plus, its focustracking performance of moving objects makes it possible to capture sharp images even when shooting wild birds or action sports. Further, the lens is quiet. Consequently, it’s suited for both still and video shooting in conditions that demand silent operation.

Further, it utilizes Tamron’s proprietary image stabilization mechanism VC (vibration compensation). The mechanism reduces blurring due to camera shake. The lens also uses AI technologies to choose the appropriate compensation characteristics for videography at focal lengths of 100mm or less.

Lens Construction

The lens’s optical construction employs 24 elements in 18 groups. Special lens elements include two XLD (eXtra low dispersion); three LD; one GM (glass molded aspherical; and one hybrid aspherical lens elements. They effectively control aberrations like axial chromatic aberrations.

The 50–400mm also uses BBAR-G2 (broad-band antireflection generation 2) coating to minimize ghosting and flares. This helps express the minute details of subjects even under backlit conditions.

Additional Features

The lens has a filter size of 67mm, the same as most Tamron lenses for mirrorless cameras. It also boasts ergonomic features that support comfortable shooting, such as a new lens design with improved texture and operability.

In addition, a connector port accommodates the dedicated Tamron Lens Utility software. Notably, for the 50–400mm lens, the software enables a focus limiter function. Connecting a computer to the lens’s connector port via the optional Tamron connection cable, users can customize functions as well as update firmware. The lens also offers rapid zooming with a zoom ring rotation arc of 75°. And an optional Arca-Swiss compatible accessory tripod mount adds convenience when using a tripod. Other features include scratch- and moisture-resistant construction; a protective fluorine coating; a zoom lock switch; a 9-blade circular diaphragm; as well as support for camera-specific functions, including fast hybrid AF and eye AF.

The Tamron 50–400mm f/4.5–6.3 Di III VC VX will reach retail September 22, 2022 with a suggested retail price of $1,299. Due to the current global health crisis, the release date or product supply schedule could change.
