Commack, NY—Tamron is developing the second gen Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 (model A065) fast-aperture telephoto zoom lens for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Moreover, the company plans to have the compact, lightweight lens available in fall 2023.

What’s more, for full-frame cameras, the 70–180mm f/2.8 G2 marks the evolution of the acclaimed first-generation model. The new lens offers several enhancements. Leading the list of improvements of the G2 lens is the incorporation of Tamron’s proprietary VC (vibration compensation) mechanism. second gen Tamron 70-180mm -Tamron-70-180mm-F2.8-Di-III-VC-VXD-G2–lifestyle

“This single lens combines profound maneuverability and practicality that is worthy of the second-generation G2 badge and will deliver shooting experiences that make a fast-aperture telephoto zoom lens even more enjoyable,” the company stated.

Furthermore, the lens maintains its predecessor’s maneuverability with a compact size and weight while enabling shooting with greater stability. The Tamron 70–180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 lens measures 6.2 inches in length and weighs 30.2 ounces.

Its optical design was revamped from the first-generation 70–180mm f/2.8 to achieve high image quality across its entire zoom range. In addition, Tamron shortened the MOD (minimum object distance) at the wide end to 11.8 inches, compared to the first-generation (33.5 inches). Tamron says this enables “users to enjoy unique photographic expressions distinctive to the lens.

The 70–180mm f/2.8 G2 zoom also features Tamron’s VXD (voice-coil eXtreme-torque drive) linear motor focus mechanism. The VXD was added to reach high-speed, high-precision autofocusing for both still and video capture. It also affords improved subject tracking.

Further, the telephoto lens supports the dedicated Tamron Lens Utility and Tamron Lens Utility Mobile apps developed in-house by Tamron. Lens owners can use the software to customize functions based on shooting styles for still photography and video.

The lens is also compatible with many camera-specific features and functions. They include Sony’s fast, hybrid AF as well as eye AF. Plus, the lens’s Ø67mm filter size is the same as most other Tamron lenses for mirrorless cameras.

Additionally, the new lens design improves operability and provides scratch resistance. It also boasts moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating to eliminate smudging and facilitate cleaning. Tamron will announce pricing closer to launch.
