San Diego, CA—Sony Electronics released its newest APS-C mirrorless camera, the Sony Alpha 6700. The mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera (ILC) adopts the high-resolution still image and video capabilities found in Sony’s full-frame Alpha and Cinema Line cameras. However, it does so within the compact, lightweight form of the α6000 series.

Moreover, for videographers and vloggers, Sony simultaneously released the ECM-M1 shotgun microphone. The compact mic features eight sound pickup modes, including stereo.

“With the release of the α6700, Sony continues its commitment to elevate the abilities of creators everywhere and at every level by empowering them with state-of-the-art tools that enable their creativity to relentlessly move forward. Sony will continue to expand its APS-C lineup to cater to and support image production activities of a diverse array of creators,” said Yang Cheng, vice president, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc.

Sony Alpha 6700 Key Features

The new ILC combines a 26-megapixel APS-C, back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor with the speed of Sony’s latest Bionz XR processing engine. Consequently, the camera supports 4K video recording at up to 120 frames per second (fps). It also achieves a wide latitude of 14+ stops for capturing details in harsh or under-lit conditions. Moreover, it adopts the S-Cinetone picture profile found in Sony’s professional Cinema Line for movie imagery that doesn’t require color grading

The α6700 provides a standard ISO sensitivity span of 100–32,000 for both stills and movies, allowing low-noise shooting. It also offers enhanced color reproduction to help ensure subjects like people and plants are captured with natural hues.

Furthermore, its AI processing unit is inherited from the α7R V, for accurate “real-time recognition AF” (autofocus). And beyond the α6000 series’ human and animal recognition, it also identifies various subjects such as birds, insects, cars/trains and airplanes. Additionally, the new camera is compatible with an array of E-mount lenses covering Sony full-frame and Cinema Line cameras.

For videographers, the α6700 harnesses data equivalent to 6K and outputs oversampled 4K video. It also employs S-Log3, offering a latitude of 14+ stops for enhanced gradation. Plus, integrated S-Cinetone, permits the α6700 to achieve accurate skin tone depiction and subject highlighting, technologies honed through Sony’s Cinema Line development.

Additional Features

Moreover, the camera’s AI-driven auto-framing tracks subjects, eliminating the need for manual camera movement. Its body also houses a multi-interface (MI) shoe compatible with digital audio interfaces. Used in conjunction with the new ECM-M1 shotgun microphone, it permits direct digital audio transmission to capture un-degraded sound. sony alphas 6700-Sony Xperia 1 V-Sony DSC-HX99 RNV Kit-Sony FE 24–70mm f/2.8 GM II Sony FE PZ 16-35mm F4 Gcanadian press Sony-Logo-HR creator in residence

In addition, the camera utilizes optical 5-axis in-body image stabilization to achieve a 5.0-stop shutter speed advantage for stills. Plus, Sony’s active mode helps achieve stable footage. The ILC also supports the Sony Creators’ App to upload videos and still images to cloud services.

In terms of portability, the Alpha 6700 measures 4-7/8×2-3/4×3 inches and weighs about 1 pound. It also has a touch-operable vari-angle LCD monitor, coupled with a touch menu for easy operation. A customizable front dial and a switching dial for still images, movies and S&Q modes are also featured.

Additionally, it integrates Sony’s Screen Reader function. This feature reads menus and video playback screens aloud to assist operations for a variety of creators.

Sony will make the α6700 available in 2023. Camera only, it will have a suggested retail price of $1,399.99. Moreover, the α6700 L kit includes the PZ16–50mm lens for an SRP of $1,499.99. The α6700 M kit w an 18–135mm lens will retail for $1,799.99.
