Teaneck, NJ—In a pairing of creativity, Leica has long collaborated with Walt Disney, who brought his vision and passion to animated filmmaking 100 years ago. To celebrate the anniversary of the film studio, Disney and Leica unveiled the Leica Q2 Disney 100 Years of Wonder camera edition.

“We share a passion for storytelling with Disney. But above all, a visionary demand for quality. To revolutionize the techniques of animated film, Walt Disney used Leica from the very beginning,” Leica announced. 

“Since then, Disney has been animating its cartoon storyboards with Leica cameras and projectors. To celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary, we now reveal the well-kept secret of our collaboration with the limited edition Leica Q2 | Disney 100 Years of Wonder.

One look at the Leica Q2 Disney 100 Years of Wonder camera reveals the collaboration between the two companies. The cover of the special edition features drawings of Mickey Mouse, Disney’s best-known characters. The drawings from 1937 were penned by Don Towsley, one of Disney’s most renowned animators. It was also around that time Disney began using Leica cameras and projectors to bring storyboard animations to life.

Mickey Mouse and other design details are embossed on the camera’s top plate and display glass. The edition is also adorned with a special material reminiscent of the tracing paper on which Disney’s creators penciled scenes and characters.

The limited production run of 500 also includes a specially designed rope strap, a matching bag and a certificate of authenticity. And, it’s wrapped in specially designed packaging.

Leica Q2 Specs

The Leica Q2 is a premium, compact, point-and-shoot camera characterized by an updated sensor and intuitive operation. At its core is a full-frame, 47.3-megapixel CMOS sensor and Maestro II image processor. They enable it to achieve high-resolution still shooting. Further, the Q2 records 4K DCI 24p and 4K UHD 30p video, as well as Full HD recording at up to 120 fps.

Its processor also contributes to a broad ISO 50–50,000 sensitivity range plus 10-frames-per-sec, full-resolution continuous shooting with its mechanical shutter. Moreover, its high resolution affords a series of crop modes that simulate working with longer focal length lenses. They include 35mm, 50mm and 75mm fields of view.

The camera additionally features a quick 49-area autofocus system. And still images are recorded as 14-bit DNG files and JPEGs.

The Leica Q2 boasts an integrated Summilux 28mm f/1.7 wide-angle prime lens. The lens uses three aspherical elements to control distortion and spherical aberrations. Its fast f/1.7 maximum aperture also excels in low light and offers control over depth of field.

Photographers can also benefit from a dedicated macro focusing position for working with subjects 6.7 inches away. Additionally, optical image stabilization helps to compensate for the effects of camera shake for handheld shooting.

Additional Features

The Q2’s 3.68MP OLED electronic viewfinder for eye-level monitoring is joined by a 3-inch, 1.04M-dot, rear touchscreen LCD for playback and settings control. In addition, built-in Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi connectivity permit wireless sharing and remote camera control from a linked mobile device via the Leica FOTOS app.

The camera is solution for street and travel photography. Its magnesium alloy body is weather sealed for working in harsh environments. In addition, it has the same longer-life battery as Leica’s flagship SL mirrorless camera.

The special edition is limited to 500 sets worldwide. It has a suggested retail price of $5,795.
