Center Valley, PA—Japanese camera maker Olympus Corporation, announced it would discontinue its V series of compact point-and-shoot cameras—the company’s entry-level line that sells for less than $200, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Instead, Olympus reported it plans to focus on high-end models in its Micro Four Thirds and Four Thirds system lines of compact interchangeable-lens cameras, like the PEN E-P5 it just introduced.

According to the Journal, “After selling 5.1 million digital cameras in the last fiscal year, Olympus plans to sell only 2.7 million this fiscal year.” The decision was also based on the fierce competition that the entry-level digital camera category is facing from smartphones. olympus.com
