Tech Trends January 2012: Consumers Choose Cameras over Camphones for Special Moments

The share of photos taken with a smartphone went from 17% last year to 27% this year, while the share of photos taken on a digital camera dropped from 52% to 44%, according to The NPD Group’s Imaging Confluence Study.

Lower end point-and-shoot digital cameras appear to have taken the brunt of the movement to smartphones as a capture device. However, even among those consumers who were more likely to use their mobile phones than their digital cameras when capturing photos of spontaneous moments, for important events they opted to use their cameras to capture those special moments.—Liz Cutting, director and senior imaging Analyst, The NPD Group
