Portland, OR—ON1, creators of professional photo-editing software, introduced a new application for increasing image resolution. ON1 Resize AI, coming in April, is an enhancement of its predecessor ON1 Resize (formerly Genuine Fractals).
“It’s simply amazing. We’ve been working on this project for quite a while; everyone will be flat out amazed at how big they can make their photos. I’m still in awe of the results I can get using ON1 Resize AI,” said Dan Harlacher, vice president of Product.
The next-generation photo enlargement software promises to give photographers better results and higher-quality photo enlargements. It does so using AI technology. An all-new super-resolution technology will allow photographers to enlarge photos while maintaining and recovering an incredible amount of detail and sharpness.
Existing methods of photo enlargement, or interpolation, make up new pixels or resolution by copying those around them. However, this can lead to enlarged photos with less detail, soft edges and more noise.
Conversely, ON1 Resize AI uses deep machine learning to study different details. They may include natural textures like tree bark, animal fur, feathers, grass, leaves, rock and skin as well as man-made textures like concrete, fabric or brick. Furthermore, studying millions of examples of the everyday world allows the software to upscale photos and their textures to virtually any size.
Moreover, the software works as a stand-alone application and as plug-ins for Lightroom; Photoshop; Capture One; Affinity Photo; Apple Photos; as well as Corel Paintshop Pro.
ON1 Resize AI Key Features
At its core, making poster-size prints is where ON1 Resize AI excels. Users can crop to a paper size, AI-resize the photo with detail and print it directly or save the file to send to a photo lab.
Moreover, because the software produces ultrahigh resolution, the cropped portion of a photo will still have immense detail. It can equate to having a longer lens. Photographers can also use Resize AI on a still frame captured from a video editor to create a high-quality print.
In addition, the software can breathe new life into old photos. Older files and photos do not have the size and quality to compare to what is available today. However, ON1 Resize AI remasters old images, making them larger, sharper and cleaner.
What’s more, whether overcompressed or small photos, ON1 Resize AI can reduce the JPG compression artifacts while creating new details. As a result, it increases resolution and achieves higher-quality images. 
Notably, the software includes a gallery wrap feature. This feature will add reflected or stretched wings to the edge of a photo so users can make a gallery wrap without losing any image area.
Plus, photographers can divide a photo into tiles or strips to make it easier to print a mural. They control the size of the tiles and how much they overlap for trimming.
Moreover, for batch processing, the application lets users enlarge a group of photos and control how they are named; what file type they are; where to save them; their metadata; as well as add watermarks.

Additionally, in cases where a camera’s size or aspect ratio often doesn’t fit the printer, recomposing or cropping the photo is necessary to fill the page. Often with other apps, users must consider the size of paper and resolution to crop and resize simultaneously. However, ON1 Resize AI combines these functions to make it easier to fill the page in a single step. 
Also, when it comes to preparing a photo to print, knowing the proper resolution for the printer and the correct amount of sharpening for the paper choice is often daunting. ON1 Resize AI’s built-in presets make this easier; for instance, users pick the kind of printer, the type of paper and the size.
Another feature is its softproofing function. It enables users to view a simulation of how an image will look when printed based on specific printer and paper profiles.
ON1 Resize AI is available for preorder as a plug-in and stand-alone application for $99.99. It will also integrate into the ON1 Professional Plugin Bundle, which includes five of ON1’s professional plug-ins that work with other photo-editing applications, with an SRP $149.99.
The company will also offer Resize AI inside ON1 Photo RAW 2022 in a future update.
