Allendale, NJ—Leica Camera AG revealed the Life edition, a special limited edition of the Leica Trinovid 8×40 binoculars. Leica created the special edition model in collaboration with the Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson.
Moreover, with its neon green leather trim and color-matched engraving, the Leica Trinovid Life edition “is a striking eye-catcher and a work of art in one,” Leica announced. “In a worldwide edition of only 250 examples, the uniqueness of this model makes it a highly desirable object for lovers of rarities and exclusive collector’s items.”
The strictly limited Leica Trinovid 8×40 Life edition pays homage to Olafur Eliasson’s installation Life, which he presented at the Fondation Beyeler (Switzerland) in 2021. The installation presented a model of “naturalcultural” landscape that explored how nature and culture are inseparable; how humans are entangled with the elements, structures as well as systems in our environment.
For the installation, Eliasson removed the glass facade of the Fondation Beyeler that separated the inside from the outside to invite human and non-human visitors into the space. These visitors included natural elements—plants, microorganisms, wildlife as well as weather.
Bright green water, colored by a nontoxic dye, filled the space to give the impression that nature had taken over. However, it also simultaneously presented a sculpted experience.
Leica Trinovid 8×40 Life Edition
The special Leica Trinovid 8×40 Life edition also embrace the spirit of the installation. The well-crafted binoculars establish a connection between the observer and the observed; they also inspire a change in our perception of how we encounter the world around us, according to Leica.
In addition to the neon green leather trim, another feature of the special edition binoculars is their engravings filled out in green. Each unit also sports a special “Life” engraving and a unique serial number indicating it is from a limited edition (1/250).
The Leica Trinovid 8×40 Life edition comes in green packaging emblazoned with the logotype Life. The delivery includes a certificate of authenticity and a folding card with a personally signed quote from Olafur Eliasson.
Furthermore, in every other respect, the technical specifications of the Leica Trinovid Life edition are identical to those of the serial production model. Introduced in 2019, the relaunched Leica Trinovid is an homage to the iconic binoculars of the 1960s.
In addition, high-performance premium optics provide an exceptional field of view. The binoculars also offer intuitive handling and fatigue-free observation.
Leica also utilizes the latest glass types and coating; they did so to achieve true-to-life colors and a bright, high-contrast image from edge to edge. What’s more, the binoculars feature an ultralight aluminum body. The Leica Trinovid binoculars are also weather resistant.
