Anhui, China—Venus Optics officially launched another probe lens for cinematographers and filmmakers—the Laowa 24mm T8 2x Macro Pro2be. The cine-ready lens represents the evolution of the company’s Probe series, with a longer form factor and improved image quality.
In addition, the Laowa Pro2be comprises three distinct lens modules: a direct-view Probe lens; a 35º-view lens; as well as a periscope-view lens. Moreover, all three lenses feature a maximum T8 aperture, which is almost 2 stops larger than the previous versions. Venus Optics made this upgrade to increase the capabilities of the lenses on high-speed cameras and to eliminate the need to set up lighting. It also lets filmmakers have more control over the depth of field.

For three different perspectives, the new lens has long, tubular, adjustable lens barrels. It also offers improved color rendition along with its 2x magnification. Moreover, it is waterproof to 1.2 feet. Made with a professional cine housing, the new lens works with seven interchangeable mounts.
In addition, its faster maximum T8 aperture makes the lens more favorable for outdoor shooting with limited light, or for high-speed shooting. You can also have more control on the depth of field from T8 to T40, according to the lighting and setup.
Further, its long, adjustable lens barrels allow filmmakers to get the right angle for a shot. The lens barrels are almost 4 inches longer than the previous versions, permitting the lens to go farther or deeper. Moreover, with a 360° rotating mechanism, these lenses can provide more flexibility to capture the subject at different positions and elevations. You can adjust the angle of the lens on the setup with the lens mounted on the camera.
The Pro2be also has an improved optical design to better render the color and details of the image. Both the direct-view and 35º-view lenses boast 33 elements in 24 groups. The periscope lens has a 34-element, 24-group build. All three use 10 aperture blades. What’s more, all three modules employ multiple high-refractive index glass as well as extra-low dispersion elements. Consequently, they achieve improved sharpness and image quality. 
Furthermore, all three Pro2be lenses can deliver the image in 2:1 magnification of the object. Additionally, filmmakers can capture intricate details with a working distance of less than an inch. As a result, the lens is a solution for shooting product b-rolls, such as watches and jewelry with intricate details.
Other Features
In addition, the new lens is an option for various applications. For instance, the periscope lens can stay close to the ground while maintaining the camera at a high level. This allows the capture of ground-level angles. Further, with the long and periscopic tube, the Pro2be can “travel through” different objects without limit. It can also pair with robot arms to create dynamic footage for commercials, movies or other creative works through precise motion control. 
What’s more, it allows cinematic low- and high-angle commercial shots. For example, giant-like product shots are achieved with the built-in 35° tilt of the lens. It is more convenient for filmmakers to shoot when the camera is leveled, and the degree of the tilted angle can be maintained for every shot.
Plus, you can capture top-angle shots without bringing the camera sky-high. The Pro2be extends the angle and can capture overhead shots with the camera installed in a comfortable position. Finally, with the periscope and 35° view, you can get extreme close-up shots from various positions.
Venus provides seven interchangeable-mount bayonets for the Pro2be. All three lenses can share the same bayonet. Moreover, you can convert the mounts in a few steps. As a result, you can use the lens on different cine and high-speed cameras without adapters. The available mounts include Arri PL, Canon EF, Canon RF, Nikon F, Nikon Z, Sony E as well as the L mount.
The Laowa 24mm T8 2x Macro Pro2be has the following suggested retail prices: direct view, $2,849; 35º view, $3,149; and periscope view, $3,349. Venus also offers them in a three-lens set for $8,499.
