Melville, NY—Canon USA showcased a first-of-its-kind immersive virtual reality experience—its Kokomo Software by Canon. Currently in development, Kokomo is a software platform designed to change human communication. It does so by combining virtual reality (VR) with an immersive calling experience.

Moreover, the software will provide users with a way to meet friends and family virtually “in-person” by using a compatible Canon camera, a VR headset and a smartphone. It will enable users to see and hear one another in real time with their live appearance and expression, in a photo-real environment. In addition, they will experience a VR setting in locations like Malibu, New York or Hawaii. Canon-Kokomo-software-Logo

Furthermore, the app uses Canon cameras and imaging technology to create realistic representations of users. Consequently, calls feel like participants are interacting face-to-face rather than through a screen or an avatar.

Kokomo software works with the Canon EOS R5 and RF5.2mm f/2.8 L dual fisheye lens.

Canon says this creates a Real“Together” Experience. “With Kokomo, we’re tapping into Canon’s innovative spirit and heritage of high-quality imaging to enable people to have real, authentic interactions when they get together in VR. Every ImmersiveCall should be a memorable experience,” said Kazuto “Kevin” Ogawa, president and CEO, Canon USA, Inc. “Kokomo will enable people to create memorable, meaningful connections.”

CES 2022 attendees were the first to try out the Kokomo software by Canon during an ImmersiveCall demonstration. It featured the Canon RF5.2mm f/2.8 L dual fisheye lens. The software will launch in 2022. The company also plans to add new destinations, functionalities and features to the Kokomo app. It will also expand its compatibility with Canon cameras.
