Willard S. Boyle, the Nobel Prize winner who co-invented the charge-coupled device (CCD), a piece of technology present in virtually every modern-day camera and camcorder as well as many HDTVs, died this week at the age of 86, the New York Times reported.
Boyle, who worked at Bell Laboratories, invented the CCD along with George E. Smith in the 1970s. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2009.
His death was “kidney-related,” the Times said.
