Online Retail’s Best Sites

BIGresearch and STORES magazine recently released their list of the Top 50 online retail companies as picked by consumers and while there were few surprises on the list most of the sites that showed up on it had several things in common, according to BIGresearch – stellar customer service, smart use of new web technologies and the constant addition of fresh ideas.

Taking the top two spots, and with little shock, are Amazon.com and eBay.com. Both sites truly represent the “endless possibilities for shopping online, selling everything from fresh produce and gourmet foods to one-of-a-kind memorabilia, apparel and accessories” the study explained.

Coming in at number three was the world’s largest retailer – Wal-Mart.com – the bastion of everyday items at low, low prices. With the retail giant’s recent foray into the social-networking scene, Wal-Mart continues to be all things to all people.

Within the CE/Imaging world, BestBuy.com (4) and CircuitCity.com (12) were the only two big box CE chains that have both an online and brick-and-mortar presence that appear on the list. Online-only e-tailer TigerDirect.com came in at number 32 as they continue to show strong growth, having recently added video product reviews to their online shopping mix.

Clearly “search” continues to be a strong part of the online retail world as both Google.com (#9) and Yahoo.com (#16) also cracked the Top 20.
