A major recycling effort backed by three top names in consumer electronics launched nationally last week.

The Electronic Manufacturers’ Recycling Management Program (MRM), whose backers include Panasonic, Sharp and Toshiba, began accepting recycling at 280 locations nationwide on June 15, a number it hopes jumps to 800 in the next two years.

The program was previously running in a handful of areas.

"MRM is focused on enhancing the environmental sustainability of individual company brands and product offerings through convenient, environmentally sound and efficient recycling," MRM President David Thompson said in a statement. "With the establishment of the nationwide recycling program, one of most comprehensive in the industry, we have proven that collaborative effort is the most effective way to provide consumers with convenient recycling opportunities."
