Image processing whiz kids DxO Labs have teamed with Carl Zeiss Sports Optics on the new Zeiss Camera Eyepiece DC 4 digital camera – a unit specially designed for the spotting scope market. The DC 4 will be powered by DxO Labs’ Image Signal Processing (ISP) technology. DxO’s ISP technology, as they explain, “derives from a thorough calibration of sensor and optics to best leverage pixel signals to deliver wide color gamut, best local & global image contrasts and noiseless details.” DxO has also made their ISP technology available for a number of mobile phone hardware and software platforms.

Zeiss simplified that explanation a bit in their Photokina announcement stating, “Our Eyepiece DC 4 will now feature unrivaled image quality, including vivid colors, perfect contrast, along with sharp and noiseless detail.”

The product is expected to ship in late 2006. “We want to provide the best possible imaging device for the users of our spotting scopes. Our target is unmatched imaging properties and ease of operation. Therefore, DxO Labs’ outstanding imaging technology perfectly supports the performance of our outstanding optics and the camera unit,” stated Dr. Manfred Klingel, managing director of Carl Zeiss Sports Optics.

Both companies explained that DxO Labs’ ISP has been specifically tuned for the DC 4 and will be running on the embedded Texas Instruments OMAP DM 320 processor. Expect to see DxO’s ISP technology on the move elsewhere in the digicam market as we move into 2007.
