Las Vegas, NV—Sony took the wraps off its most powerful POV (point-of-view) camera yet: the FDR-X1000V 4K Action Cam. The compact, splashproof cam enables adventurers to capture 4K 3,840×2,160 video at 30p (100Mbps/60Mpbs).
The cam features upgraded stabilization, image quality and high-frame-rate shooting. An updated version of Action Cam’s SteadyShot stabilization technology adds electronic IS that’s three times more effective at suppressing high-frequency motor vibration. This allows the capture of vibration-free aerial footage using drones and enhances footage of fast-moving subjects. The camera also shoots HD video at high frame rates of 120p in Full HD and 240p in HD for slow-motion footage. Recorded video can be played back on a 4K TV through HDMI.
The X1000V boasts a Zeiss Tessar lens with a 170º field of view, a BSI Exmor R CMOS sensor and a Bionz X processor. It adopts full pixel readout technology from high-end Sony cameras, allowing it to read and process data from all of the sensor’s pixels to create “exceptionally smooth, highly detailed 4K and HD videos” in various formats, including MP4 and the XAVC S codec.
On the audio front, wind noise reduction minimizes wind interference with the stereo microphone. For the advanced user, there are manual controls and setting adjustments, including white balance and autoexposure shifting. Loop recording is also available, so users can maximize available memory card space, as are burst still image shooting and motion shot LE. Plus, live streaming capabilities are provided through the U-Stream platform.
A waterproof case keeps the X1000V watertight to 33 feet, and adding the AKA-DDX1 dive door lets it focus underwater at depths of 197 feet.
Sony’s FDR-X1000V will retail for about $500 packaged with the SPK-X1 waterproof case. The Action Cam FDR-X1000VR bundle adds the RM-LVR2 live view remote and sells for $600. sony.com
