Boise, ID—The board of directors of Micron Technology announced that Steve Appleton, Micron’s chairman and CEO, passed away on the morning of February 3, 2012 in a small plane accident in Boise. He was 51.

“Our hearts go out to his wife, Dalynn, his children and his family during this tragic time,” the board said in a press statement. “Steve's passion and energy left an indelible mark on Micron, the Idaho community and the technology industry at large.”

The company expects to provide additional information shortly.

Pursuant to the company’s bylaws, D. Mark Durcan, in his role as president of the company, will assume the responsibilities of CEO until the board of directors appoints a successor. The company had recently announced that Durcan would be retiring at the end of Micron’s current fiscal year, at the end of August 2012, with Mark Adams appointed to succeed Durcan. The board of directors will convene a meeting over the weekend.

“Steve was a true friend who will be dearly missed by all of us,” said Durcan, Micron president and chief operating officer. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and our team members as we all grieve this tragic loss.”
