Spending by Americans on gadgets is growing as it drops in other product areas, the government said in a report issued Tuesday, as cited by the Wall Street Journal.

According to the Commerce Department, sales of TVs, computers, video and more grew 1.8 percent in the first six months of 2010, a figure that ate into money spent on apparel and furniture. Americans spent $153.3 billion on electronics in the first half of the year.

Overall consumer spending remained flat in June, the department also said.
