Melville, NY—Canon USA recently introduced two Canon RF lenses: the compact, lightweight RF70-200mm f/4 L IS USM and the Canon RF50mm f/1.8 STM prime lens. The two completely redesigned RF-mount lenses have bloodlines to the company’s popular EF models; however, they feature new lens formulas and enhanced elements.
“As Canon began to further build out the company’s RF lens portfolio, the goal in mind was to create advanced lenses, for a variety of experience levels, that also featured a sense of familiarity for longtime Canon users,” said Tatsuro “Tony” Kano, executive vice president and general manager of Canon USA’s Imaging Technologies & Communications Group.
Canon RF50mm f/1.8 STM
With a 50mm focal length similar to the human field of vision, the RF50mm f/1.8 STM lens is an option for various shooting situations. Genres include portrait, landscapes and food photography.
Notably, Canon 50mm f/1.8 lenses are a popular tool due to their budget-friendly price and compact, lightweight bodies. Those benefits continue with the RF version, which is improved over its EF counterpart.
The first noticeable improvement is the lens’s customizable control ring; it adjusts exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture or ISO. Moreover, with a flip of the side switch, users can adjust focus.
In addition, the lens uses a PMo aspherical lens to reduce chromatic aberration. The combination of the lens shape and Super Spectra Coating minimizes ghosting as well as flaring. Other lens features are 12-pin communication; a 0.98-foot minimum focusing distance; a 0.25x maximum magnification; and 7 stops of shake correction when mounted on an EOS R camera with in-body IS.
