Marin, CA—Optrix, designer of action video and sports specialty housings for the iPhone, introduced the Optrix XD5—an ultra-rugged camera-optimizing system for the iPhone 5 that’s engineered to enable users to record wide-angle HD videos under harsh conditions.

“Optrix is proud to unveil the world’s toughest case that disasterproofs the iPhone 5,” said John Willenborg, founder of Optrix. “The XD5 is the only iPhone 5 camera system built for sports enthusiasts by sports enthusiasts.”

The Optrix XD5 system enhances the 1080p HD video optics of the iPhone 5 by adding an all-glass, three element, 175º wide-angle lens. This lens adds context to action scenes by framing in a little bit of helmet, the handlebars of the bike,or the interior of a car. And a clear protective membrane enables users to continue operating their iPhone while in the housing.

The housing is an upgrade from the previous design of the XD4, with a thinner, lighter and stronger unibody and a new rail mounting system for quick on/off for helmets, chest mounts, watersport mounts and handle mounts.

Designed using the same concept as a Formula 1 race car, the XD5 utilizes a “monocoque” protective unibody system that encapsulates the iPhone 5, shielding it from pressure and making it drop safe from up to 40 feet, according to specs. In addition, the XD5 has a waterproofing seal that Optrix guarantees has waterproof ability down to a depth of 15 feet.

In addition, the XD5 has a second door to access charging connectors, a headphone jack and a microphone. And, for iPhone 5 users wishing to enhance their videos, Optrix provides a suite of video recording and editing software and apps, including VideoPro, which adds full telemetry data such as speed, G-force, lap time and track map onto the video. The XD5 has an SRP of $129.95. optrix.com
