Commack, NY—The Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD (model B070) is a high-speed standard zoom lens for Sony E-mount APS-C mirrorless cameras. Tamron plans to release the lens on January 14, 2021

The new 17–70mm f/2.8 lens is Tamron’s first high-speed zoom lens for mirrorless cameras with APS-C-size sensors. Moreover, it features a maximum aperture of f/2.8 across its entire 4.1x zoom ratio. In addition, the lens covers a full-frame-equivalent focal length of 25.5–105mm. As a result, the standard zoom is ideal for everyday use.

What’s more, the small, lightweight lens employs Tamron’s VC (vibration compensation) mechanism to minimize the effects of camera shake. The VC mechanism leverages artificial intelligence (AI) technology when shooting video.

The new lens features moisture-resistant construction and a protective fluorine coating to facilitate easy cleaning. Furthermore, it is compatible with many of the features that Sony builds into its mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras. They include Fast Hybrid AF technology as well as eye AF.

The optical construction of the new 17–70mm f/2.8 features 16 elements in 12 groups. Two GM (glass molded aspherical) lens elements and one hybrid aspherical lens element are precisely arranged to maintain high-resolution performance from edge to edge.

In addition, the lens uses Tamron’s upgraded VC mechanism. Additional sophisticated algorithms optimized for this model and a dedicated, independently operating MPU all combine to compensate for vibration. Notably, this feature is available when the lens is used with cameras with or without in-body image stabilization. When shooting video, by leveraging AI technology, image stabilization performance is also improved compared to conventional models.

The 17–70mm f/2.8 focuses close—down to a 7.5-inch MOD (minimum object distance). Plus, the 15.4-inch MOD at the 70mm telephoto end ensures close-range shooting performance to create compelling close-up shots.

Despite its robust feature set, the lens measures 4.7 inches in length and 74.6mm in maximum diameter; it weighs in at 18.5 ounces. It also maintains the same small Ø67mm filter size of each lens in Tamron’s mirrorless lens lineup.

Another feature is the lens’s RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) stepping motor. The quiet unit is perfect for video use. A rounded 9-blade aperture is also incorporated.

Standard accessories for the Sony E-mount lens are a flower-shaped hood and lens caps. Tamron plans to ship the 17–70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD in mid-January. It will have a suggested retail price of $799.
