The Consumer Electronics Association issued a statement Wednesday, responding to a study on fair use released by the Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA), praising the innovation that results from the fair use doctrine.
“Fair use is an underappreciated essential backbone to the U.S. economy,” president and CEO Gary Shapiro said. “We are pleased groups are working to quantify the crucial role fair use and carefully balanced copyright law play in our innovation economy and we hope more analysis will be done.”
The CEA is supporting The Fair Use Act, a resolution in Congress that is an acronym for “Freedom And Innovation Revitalizing U.S. Entrepreneurship Act.” The bill, cosponsored by Democratic Rep. Rick Boucher of Virginia and Republican Rep. John Doolittle of California, would give Americans, including academics and journalists, more freedom to use copyrighted works. The bill was referred to the House Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property in March, but has seen little action since.
